Aiming to mitigate and prevent human suffering in an armed conflict, International Humanitarian Law gives us answers to questions, such as: who can and cannot be targeted and under which conditions; at what times does a protected person lose protection; who is a combatant; what distinguishes a combatant from a civilian; and, what protections are available to those who do not take part in an armed conflict. Amidst the many interstate conflicts, such as, Ukraine-Russia, Iran-Israel and Palestine-Israel conflicts, as well as the intrastate ones, such as in Sudan, having a working knowledge of International Humanitarian Law becomes even more vital as it re-establishes one's trust in law and humanity at such uncertain times as these ones.
