Understanding the Global System: Introduction to International Relations for ALL

The course gives an introduction to international politics from a theoretical perspective. The discipline of international relations looks at political interactions at the global level. In the context of this course, we will look at states as the most important actors in international politics, although we will also look at the influence of, for example, international governmental organizations (such as the United Nations) and non-governmental organizations (such as Amnesty International or terrorist groups like the Islamic State). How can the behaviour of states and other actors be explained? This question is central to the course. Assumptions from various schools of thought, such as realism, liberalism, and constructivism are discussed extensively. In the course, the most important insights that these theories have presented are dealt with on the basis of concrete examples. Therefore, attention will also be given to specific issues and developments in international politics, such as globalization, regionalism, terrorism, war and peace, human rights, poverty and development, climate change and nuclear non-proliferation.

    Course Objectives
Goal 1: to introduce key issues, theories, and debates in international relations
Goal 2: to apply this knowledge to understand international relations

How to identify and relate the core elements comprising scientific research articles in the fields of political science and international relations.

    About Me

Hi! Thank you so much for visiting my page!

My name is Jack and I am here to teach you about the fantastic discipline of International Relations. I am a 24-year-old graduate of International Relations and Organisations and I currently work at the British Embassy here in The Hague, the Netherlands. I love teaching, meeting new people, and I consider myself very easy to talk to.

It is a discipline I am extremely passionate about, and I want to share this passion with my students. I am keen to build a relationship with you the student, so that I may better understand your needs and learning style. Alongside the specified courses, I am also here to assist with any academia related queries, writing papers and conducting research, as well as university and internship applications. I was in your shoes once!

Above all, I seek to make everything we do enjoyable and benefit you.

Interested? Let's organise a quick call to get to know each other and discuss options!

    Education

I graduated from Leiden University with a BSc in International Relations and Organisations. I completed this degree 'Cum Laude' with honours. My thesis research was a qualitative, interpretivist piece entitled 'The Alliance Security Dilemma, NATO & Strategic Consensus'. for which I was awarded a 9/10 and nominated for best thesis in Political Science 2022. I have also taken courses in Comparative Politics, Global Security, Global History, International Development and others. Although I am well versed in International Relations generally, my expertise lies in international and European security, grand strategy and foreign policy analysis.

I am currently undertaking an MSc in Political Science with a specialisation in International Politics also at Leiden University. I am continuing with this same strain of research.

    Experience / Qualifications

My current role is at the British Embassy in The Hague, where I am part of the Policy Team. I deal mostly with British-Dutch bilateral affairs, but I also have experience with International Law, the OPCW and other multilateral affairs. I was fortunate enough to attend the 2023 UK-NL Joint Diplomatic Training at the Foreign Office in London. I can therefore provide a practical, real-world insight into International Relations.

Previously, I was also part of the Implementation Support Unit of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention. Here I was able to gain a rich insight into an international treaty, and the important work of civil society.

History and geopolitics courses in middle and high school
Learn the methodology in dissertation and document analysis from middle school as well as high school. This is what is present in History Geography and in the HGGSP specialty, and I offer courses aimed, in addition to helping the learning of courses in these subjects, to put it into practice in an exercise with a built methodology. It is this methodology that I teach, in order to provide the student with independence. I can also provide homework help in these classes, as well as re-explain and repeat poorly understood course points. As for speaking in public, it is necessary for the oral exams at the end of high school. I have been part of a debate group for 3 years and have acquired a certain mastery there. I am a student in high school, in the final year and I already have experience in helping with homework in my high school. I also chose the HGGSP specialty (geopolitics and political science) in second and I obtained my baccalaureate in this subject.
