Creative Writing Support - Beginner to Advanced Level.

Creative writing is often portrayed as a solitary task. This cannot be further from the truth! Even professional authors have their work proofread, edited, and through this process redrafted. I offer these services to writers of every level. As a writer myself, I specialise in prose and plays, and am happy to look at work from a spectrum of literature. Specifically, I look to help support you with your work by proofreading, checking for grammar and spelling, but also suggesting literary techniques that may improve your work. Furthermore, I can provide a range of exercises for new writers to explore their tone and style, and am happy to help people to whom English is a second or third language gain confidence in their writing!

About Me

I am a recent graduate of the University of Edinburgh, and while studying I found a love for collaborative work and helping others! Throughout my degree, I tutored high school students privately and found joy in reading and giving feedback to my academic colleagues. I specialise in exam prep for high school students, but also have experience in giving feedback for creative folio pieces, something I have learnt independently and been taught via creative writing classes. Outside of tutoring I write, and have been recently published in Pushing Out the Boat Magazine!

Education

University of Edinburgh, 2018-2023
MA English Literature, First class Honours
University of Copenhagen, Exchange 2021-2022
Studied MA Creative Writing and Creative Non-fiction, Achieved A - grade equivalent

Experience / Qualifications

Tutored privately for three years. Students have typically found a two-grade increase from prelim grade. (eg. C in prelim to A in exam). While I specialise in English and creative writing, I have also tutored Drama, which I studied in school and practice as an extracurricular, and psychology. If you are interested in these, please send me a message enquiring!
English Literature, while being a fun and engaging subject, can be equally daunting - especially when getting your ideas down on the page! This class is designed for Scottish High school students, ranging from National 5 to Advanced Higher level, and offers support with how to approach textual analysis, essay writing skills, proofreading, and exam techniques so that your ideas can be conveyed in the best way possible. I have a first-class MA undergraduate in English literature from the University of Edinburgh, so am up to date with contemporary literary theory and debates. Furthermore, I sat the Scottish National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher English exams myself, and achieved A's, as recently as 2018 so I have an understanding of what the courses entail. I have tutored privately for three years, and am available in person and over Zoom. My approach to teaching English is a collaborative one, allowing for an open discussion of your aims and needs. I can tailor to what each person struggles with in class while providing the information and structure needed to excel in examinations. Furthermore, I will proofread the folio work required for the exam. I find that with this approach, students gain the confidence and skill set needed to tackle their examinations and thrive.

Elise
French private lessons by university graduate in Letters
Holder of a Master's degree in Letters and endowed with a solid experience in private lessons, I provide French lessons for students wishing to: - consolidate their bases in grammar, spelling - improve their language skills (allophone students) - improve their speaking skills (conversation classes) -profect the written expression - prepare for ECR exams - prepare for the written examinations at the end of the studies (maturity, certificate of completion) - help with the writing of works of maturity (or other works of end of studies), of dissertation - work on argumentative texts - acquire a method to analyze literary texts - learn how to perform bibliographic research The course material is a Google Docs document that I create in which my explanations, possible links, exercises appear. By reading it regularly, progress will be faster. It can also be used in addition to other documents (files printed by school teachers and/or books) and has many advantages: automatic updating, downloadable on tablets and smartphones, simultaneous monitoring of what is writing. For help with writing: The objective is above all to acquire effective tools. The student will thus be able to learn to structure his ideas, argue coherently (and convincingly) and enrich his vocabulary. It is essential for me to have written work from the student between each lesson. For analyzes of oral literary texts: In order to optimize the time available (and to put ourselves in conditions closest to oral exams), we choose together an extract from a work that the student will have previously prepared before the lesson. This would take around 20 minutes at most, and ideally just a little before the meeting time. If necessary, I have the habit of taking a paragraph at random which would serve as a basis for analyzing a passage. For the corrections of end of studies work: so that the meeting with the student is at the most profitable, I ask him to send me his writings before the meeting. Apart from my presence with the student, any course involves a preparation time before and after the lesson, including the work that I correct. My goal is to design an individualized course, so I take the time to write detailed comments on corrected work or tips to ensure maximum success for everyone. For example, an editorial correction can easily be the subject of a detailed commentary of 4 typewritten pages. For adults (FLE): In order to optimally prepare the first ones, I take the initiative to inform myself in advance of their objectives / expectations. Whether to practice speaking in everyday life, the professional world or to practice oral presentations, I prepare either PPT or technical sheets in advance that I send by mail ( after booking on the website). The other alternative is to make a PV of the course that I send (or that I print). Giving importance to keeping a written record on the one hand to better memorize the topics covered, on the other hand to better assimilate the spelling. Of a general nature, a concrete situation that responds to the learner's needs is the starting point. From this situation, I address the essential grammatical points.

Poetry writing: explore the building blocks for fun and effective poems!
This class will introduce you to some building blocks for writing effective poetry. This will focus on imaginative and descriptive aspects of poetry, as opposed to technical and academic aspects. It also works for creative writing in general. However, it will specifically focus on some of the more playful and concise elements of poetry, as opposed to the structure and narrative of prose, for example. There are a lot of barriers and negative preconceptions around poetry which I am to dismantle - building confidence and making poetry feel fun, as opposed to fearful! Enthusiasm is more important to me than academic ability. I also welcome pupils who speak English as an additional language and will try my best to accommodate as many access needs as possible. Please message me if you have any access needs that you'd like to discuss in advance.

Engaging Creative Writing Classes (For All Levels)
I am a tutor with 7+ years of experience teaching at a variety of levels from primary school to GCSE level. I teach English Language, English Literature, ESOL (English for speakers of other languages), Maths, and Creative Writing. I have a special passion for creative writing, which I specifically studied in my joint honours degree (BA English with Creative Writing), and specialise in producing stories, written poetry, and spoken word poetry which I have previously performed at events. I have run creative writing workshops for children at previous educational centres and love to make writing enjoyable, engaging and exciting for all of my students at all levels. I believe the most successful results come from fostering a friendship with my students, and providing constant encouragement and support in their areas of interest. I pride am an attentive listener and I carefully plan my lessons according to the specific needs of my students, which is particularly helpful for my SEN, ESOL, and younger pupils. At the beginning of every lesson I also do short icebreaker activities and challenges with my students, using a points reward system to keep them engaged. Previous students have gone on to become the top of their class and receive recognition at school for both English and Maths. Lessons start at 1 hour in length, with longer lessons available if required. Lessons are structured according to the needs of the student; this can be working alongside their class syllabus to support them with progress at school, tackling an area or subject they want to excel at, and helping them prepare for national exams such as GCSEs. I provide feedback after every lesson and detailed progress reports every six months for each student. I primarily offer online lessons as I have found this works well for me and my students, but in some cases I do teach face-to-face depending on location and availability within London. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have - I look forward to speaking with you soon!
