ESL is the term used to describe English language instruction for English learners who are non-native speakers of English or learners whose first language is not English. Other terminologies that are related to ESL include ESOL
(English for Speakers of Other Languages), and EFL (English as a Foreign Language). Much as the three
terminologies refer to a similar concept (generally, English learners whose first language is not English), there are
nuances that differentiate the three. EFL, for example, refers to students who are “non-native English speakers, but who are learning English in a country where English is not the primary language.
Teaching English as Second Language/ Foreign Language (ESL)/(EFL) involves guiding ESL/EFL learners to develop communicative competence in the four language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Hence the focus of ESL teaching is not the acquisition of the theories of language, but the practical language skills that you will
need for communication in real life situations.
