To teach law, whether administrative law, civil law (general / property, or family), criminal law / criminal procedure, judicial law / ADR (alternative dispute resolution methods) or public or private international law, I rely on the university courses that have been instilled in me and to which I still have access.
I was a diligent student, so I have syllabuses in all the subjects I teach but also my own notes and legislative / jurisprudential / doctrinal elements that I have accumulated over time by doing my internships, my work at the firm and at the university and by teaching.
I also have access to online legal search engines and to ULB and UCL law libraries. As part of my Specialized Master, I keep myself informed of legislative developments in order to always be up to date.
Of course, I also base myself on the most important tool: legislation! In many matters, a Code is published, whether it is an official Code or an unofficial collection of the most important legislative texts on the subject. It is crucial to be able to make a good use of the legislation, to know where to look and how to correctly annotate a Code: markers, post-it, fluorescent, etc. It is also important, if it is allowed for the examination, to cross reference articles to articles in its Code in order to link the additional information together.
I consider it part of my lessons to teach the student to use his Code correctly (if he has difficulties at this level), it is part of learning the subject!
Every student is different and it is important to consider the specific needs of each. This is why I adapt the methodology of my course to the specific requests of my students: need to deepen one part of the course more than another, need to understand the theory, need to learn to apply the theory to be able to solve casus, etc. Some students want to have a holistic view of the subject, while others will want clarification on specific points. I adapt to all requests and am not closed to "atypical" courses!
The important thing is that the student feels free to ask all his questions, whether they concern a branch of law in particular, law in general or advice concerning exams!
I love to transmit and share and above all I want to give back a taste for law to those who have lost a little motivation or who would feel lost or who, quite simply, and like all of us, are having difficulty. at one point ! :)
