Making music for a film means making a musical interpretation of a story. Knowing cinematic storytelling is the key to make music that has the desired effect to a scene.
I’ve created this course to offer a guideline how to look at music in a film from a dramaturgical point of view: when something happens in the story, how can the music react to that? What kind of different options are there: for example, focusing on the character, the atmosphere, or making a link to the outside world?
These individual lessons are for musicians and artists interested in expanding their own music-making to a more dramaturgical direction – whether you're a professional musician or making music as a hobby. You’ll learn how to make artistic choices and decisions that feel true to you, and improve your skills to create an emotional connection between the image and the music.
The assignments are based on the student’s own music-making. We will be analysing scripts, scenes, and make music for them. We will think about the qualities of instrumentations and what effect certain choices of sounds can make.
