My name is Laura I am a professional musician, singer, songwriter, cellist vocal coach and cello teacher with 10 years experience of teaching children, young people and adults in schools, colleges and community settings. Having studied Folk and Traditional Music at Newcastle University, I perform as a folk/ pop singer, songwriter and cellist. TEACHING EXPERIENCE: I am committed to empowering individuals to get to know, explore and realise the full potential of their own voice and dedicated to helping pupils to develop skills and achieve potential. My vocal training is informed by the Estill method and The Natural Voice, giving me an excellent knowledge of vocal anatomy and of how the voice works. I am a member of the Natural Voice Network. I teach the Folk Choir and solo folk singing at Morley College, London as well as leading community choirs, working in schools and teaching freelance. I have a City & Guilds Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector. LESSONS: My teaching style is enjoyable, engaging and motivating. I tailor repertoire and teaching methods to suit individual pupil needs. I bring my wide musical experience to my teaching, drawing from pop, classical music, folk, music theatre, jazz and music from around the world. Trusted teacher: I have taught music lessons at all levels, but I am especially talented at helping beginner or intermediate students to master their skills of holding the instrument in such a way as to play without pain and therefore get a more beautiful sound out of the instrument. I have taught ages 5-adult and at one time had a private lessons studio in the US of 50 students per year. And I have taught hundreds of students through all my work in the schools. With viola performance and teacher certification degrees, I have worked in public and private schools in the US, India, and Sweden for more than 20 years, creating community and empowering people with music. While I was living in the Seattle area, my orchestra programs were recognized as among the top in Washington state. I was invited to judge solo and ensemble competitions in the area and be a guest teacher with other prominent orchestras. I had many students win regional competitions and perform in Washington All-State Orchestra and All-Northwest orchestras. I sing, write and arrange music that has been performed for school events, culture festivals, regional church conference, and the 2013 USA national church conference for Community of Christ. Rachael is a mezzo soprano based in London with an extensive teaching and performance career. After graduating from Leeds College of Music in 2016 with a first class honours undergraduate degree, Rachael has continued her learning with Julie Kennard, in preparation for a Masters in Opera Performance. Rachael teaches across London both privately and in schools, where she runs workshops in musicianship and performance. Rachael also plays cello, and studied for three years with esteemed cellist Alfia Nakipbekova. Rachael plays regularly with orchestras, and also has experience in the popular music setting, where she has played with bands in Leeds and London. Teaching in Singing Rachael teaches all levels and ages of singers. A typical lesson will include: - Having fun with singing! - Learning of songs - Technical exercises in warm ups, breathing exercises and muscle and relaxation exercises - Performance techniques - Guidance and advice based on building confidence - Graded exams if appropriate Teaching in Cello Rachael focuses on beginner and intermediate cellists, with lots of focus on: - Cello 101: the basics of cello playing - Technique: fun exercises to aid the performance of pieces - Playing some fun and interesting pieces to challenge and improve your playing ability - Musical expression - Rhythm exercises - Graded exams if appropriate Music Theory Although Rachael teaches all of her singing and cello pupils music theory in each lesson, sometimes dedicated time is needed - especially when approaching an exam! Genre Rachael teaches most genres of singing and cello. The First Lesson First lessons begin with Rachael finding out what experience (if any) you have and what you would like to achieve. Beginners For beginner singers and children one should expect to buy some materials (such as music books) to aid learning and practice. For beginner cellists and children you will need to source your own cello. Rachael can offer advice and guidance about this, but unfortunately she does not have cellos available for pupils to hire.
