Long tones and scales are the two things I still do every single day to this day, even after many years of playing the oboe professionally. They are the fundamental building blocks of tone, support and breathing and therefore need to be practiced regularly. This is why I always start my lessons with these, regardless of the student's level of playing. Sight-reading is a very useful tool to acquire, especially if you would like to play in ensembles. And as for etudes and pieces, I believe that technique and musicality go hand in hand. You cannot have one without the other in order to play music to a high level.
