    About Me

Hello! My name is Claire and I have recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh. I have been an online tutor for over three years now, and I specialise in French, History, English, and Sociology. I enjoy creating a comfortable and productive environment in which my students improve their confidence as well as their academic and/or linguistic ability. I thoroughly enjoy what I do, and I find passing on my enthusiasm for a subject immensely satisfying.

As an experienced tutor specializing in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, I bring creativity and a wealth of diverse resources to each session. My teaching approach is tailored to make learning both effective and enjoyable, ensuring that students feel supported and motivated. I am dedicated to creating a warm and comfortable environment where students can confidently practice and improve their English skills. I have experience teaching all levels of English, including preparing students for exams to enter universities and more. Join me, and let's embark on an engaging journey to learning - and one day mastering - the English language together!
Using interactive and engaging activities, we will explore whichever issues within the Britain, European and World, and Scottish topics you are focusing on. Each week, I always include quizzes on your chosen topics to assess your understanding at random points, and we start completing essay-style and past paper source questions from the get-go to ensure students are comfortable with the exam format. I have pre-made answer structures for each type of source question to simplify this part of the exam, and to ensure that students can pick up as many marks as possible. Having achieved 100% in both my National 5 and Higher History prelims and therefore obtaining the History award at my school, I know exactly how to get every mark available to students taking this exam. I also understand how to achieve a very good mark in the assignment which can give students a huge boost in terms of marks and confidence going into the final exam.
As an experienced tutor specializing in French for GCSE and A-level, and SQA National 5 and Higher qualifications, I employ a creative approach using a variety of resources to make learning engaging and effective. My sessions are designed to help students not only excel in their exams but also to develop a deep appreciation for the French language. I am passionate about creating a warm and comfortable environment where students feel confident to practice and improve their skills. I also have experience teaching French to adult beginners, as well as the International GCSE qualification. Let's work together to achieve your French language goals with confidence and enthusiasm!
SQA National 5 and Higher English are arguably the most important qualifications you undertake whilst in Secondary School in Scotland. In the lessons I run, I make powerpoints/pdfs each week that are tailored to the specific needs of students. We go through poems, short stories, or prose via interactive and engaging tasks to ensure a deep understanding of the text(s) is consolidated. I then always introduce past paper questions at the earliest point possible in order to ensure students are fully comfortable with the format of the exam, and to assess the extent to which they understand the text(s) they are studying. The same goes for the reading paper (RUAE) - I have pre-made answer structures for each type of question that can be asked for this paper, and I get students to apply these when answering past papers. I often ask students to write summaries, prepare essays, and/or answer past paper questions as homework.

Social Sciences and qualitative research for higher education (from bachelor to post-doc)
I offer Social Sciences and qualitative research classes for university students in all levels. I have experience teaching and mentoring students at different levels of their academic formation. From classic social studies, to the most recent theoretical developments in Anthropology, Sociology, Political Sciences or History, I can guide you through the intricacies of social thought and research in a clear, motivated and exciting way. Who am I? A committed social scientist, MA and Ph.D in Anthropology, completed 4yrs post-Ph.D in political anthropology. I have conducted four different research projects, all of them focusing in southern African communities and dealing with an array of distinct topics (religious syncretism; memory and identity; local and state politics; literary practices; history making; power and authority). During my studies I have built a very consistent and broad theoretical and ethnographic knowledge, particularly, but not only, when it comes to the interdisciplinary field of African studies (a complex literature in which I feel very comfortable and able to navigate with full proficiency). I am a very experienced researcher (with more than 3 years of fieldwork experience in southern Africa), acquainted with all kinds of qualitative methods, from interviews, ritual analysis, archival work and social media research. I have much experience writing, assessing and tutoring research projects; peer-reviewing academic papers (including American Anthropology, Caderno de Estudos Africanos, among others); participating in thesis commission board; and as a university professor. Mentoring and teaching is truly my passion, and with a very consistent and mature knowledge of the literature you can expect a most precise, competent assistance. How do I work? * You have a specific topic to unravel: we will go to the button of it through an interdisciplinary genealogy of concepts and an attentive look to their uses in concrete situations. * You have an ongoing/finished paper: I will proofread your paper and offer you a logic schematics of your central argument. The idea is to first pull you out of the hurricane to identify its trajectory, and then push you back at its peaceful centre, were we can polish your ideas, cleaning unnecessary digressions and adding relevant data and literature. * You have/need a research project: I will read and comment your project in case you already have one and offer you with a schematic of the literature related with your topic so that we can identify relevant gaps in the literature. After doing that, we will consider your objectives and consider through pertinent questions for your research. * You are writing a thesis: I will first go through your research project and cross-check with you the actual results of your research. Once we have done that, we will analyse the nature and quality of your data, the span of the literature covered, chapters you might have already written, and, of course, the issues that excites you most. The idea is to identify where your strength is and what can be done do reinforce your arguments (more research, if possible; or literature review, if necessary). All this will be done with organizational support, helping you plan and schedule your writing with confidence, grace and, most importantly, no suffering!

Academic writing and research support in social sciences/humanities for undergraduates, postgraduates and early career academics
I am a former University Senior Lecturer with over 20 years experience in teaching and research. I am passionate about inspiring individuals to aim high. I have assisted multiple students and early career academics to achieve their goals. I worked in research and teaching roles within UK universities between 2004 and 2024 and am an Advance HE Fellow. I am the author of four books, have published in a range of international peer reviewed journals and have chapters in various other books. I also have significant experience in peer-reviewing for academic journals. After a twenty-year career in UK higher education I decided to embark on my own freelance private tutoring and academic consultancy business. I have delivered bespoke 1:1 tutorials to university students since April 2023. I was a part-time private tutor from April 2023 to June 2024 and have been full-time since then working with various tutoring agencies. I teach social sciences, qualitative research methods, study skills and academic writing and I have assisted students from undergraduate to PhD level. I have also assisted early career researchers or those new to teaching at the higher education level. I believe that students learn best when they construct knowledge for themselves rather than passively take it in, so all my classes are student-centred and aim to help you become an independent learner by improving your skills so that you can perform better in your assessments. I offer online lessons. A typical online lesson is 1-2 hours. I can also read, review and provide detailed feedback on your work if required.

SOCIOLOGY / PSYCHOLOGY / ENGLISH LITERATURE LESSONS AND EXAM PREPERATION FOR GCSE AND A LEVEL STUDENTS
Welcome to my lessons for tutoring! In my classes, I emphasise knowledge analysis and improvement across English Literature / Sociology / Psychology. My method emphasises personalised guidance that is tailored to the needs of each student. I assist with teaching the appropriate content and exam strategies that students need to get the best grades possible. In Sociology, I do exam practice and go over topics. Sociology is the study of human social life and you can expect to cover topics such as work, families, gender roles, multiculturalism, media and culture and globalisation. During my lessons, I will elaborate on these topics and allow you to understand and feel confident within this subject. In Psychology, I will teach students key theories and behaviours of humans. During my lessons I will compare psychological theories to real life durations and I will explain this in a deeper level to help students. In English literature, through a more in-depth analysis of context, I help students become more proficient writers, which helps them feel more comfortable with the topic. I like to give tasks to my students after class to make sure they feel secure and fully comprehend what they are learning. My intention is for my pupils to feel enthusiastic and confident about studying these subjects both during and after my classes, since this will benefit them both academically and in real-world scenarios. I'm hoping you'll come along for a supportive experience with me!

    French and various reflections
I propose to help understand the rules of the French language (grammar, spelling, conjugation ...) so that the interlocutor can subsequently acquire skills to express themselves easily in writing, especially to make his opinions heard, present or future. I will also be happy to provide keys of understanding to facilitate the writing, the synthesis or the analysis and the comments of texts. My life experiences have allowed me to adapt my pedagogy to the needs and desires of different audiences. I also place myself in a non-hierarchical perspective of the transmission of knowledge, and I therefore register in a different report master-student scheme, which I consider paternalistic and disrespectful of the "student" in question. I'm just proposing to give some time to sharing what I've learned in my life experiences. I can go for a first meeting so that you have an idea to know if I can match your expectations.
