Latin + Greek for Beginners - a great way to improve memory, understand ancient cultures, and assist modern language learning
Studying Latin and Greek can enhance your understanding of English vocabulary and grammar, as many English words have roots in these languages. By learning Latin and Greek, you can develop a deeper appreciation for the origins of words and their meanings. This knowledge can be useful in fields such as law, medicine, and science, where technical vocabulary has Latin and Greek roots.
Knowing these languages can also improve your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Both Latin and Greek are highly structured, and mastering them requires attention to detail and logical thinking - it's the kind of brain training that puts your morning crossword or sudoku to shame! Furthermore, studying ancient texts can help you both to develop analytical and interpretive skills that can be applied in various academic and professional fields, and also gain a firm grasp on cultures which permeate modern life.
These ancient languages are also useful for those interested in pursuing a career in academia, law, medicine, or any field that values research and analysis, since many graduate programs require knowledge of Latin and Greek, and fluency in these languages can open up opportunities for research and scholarship in fields such as classics, history, and philosophy.
Finally, learning Latin and Greek can also provide personal enrichment and cultural understanding. These languages have been instrumental in shaping Western culture, from their mythology and philosophy, to theatre and art. Studying Latin and Greek can provide insight into the history, literature, and art of ancient civilizations, and the ways in which they reach into modern life.
In summary, learning Latin and Greek can offer a range of benefits, from improving your understanding of English to enhancing your critical thinking skills, opening up career opportunities, and providing cultural enrichment.
I can ensure a pleasant and upbeat working atmosphere, that will keep your mind as sharp as a tack!

About Me
Hello, I’m Calypso, a Latin and Greek tutor. After graduating from Oxford in 2019 I started teaching remedial Classical languages, and also some English language and literature. I have taught pupils who have gone on to study at top schools like Winchester College. I myself went to Charterhouse and have a comprehensive understanding of the pressurised atmosphere of independent schools.My ethos when it comes to teaching is building confidence. I know how it feels to be a little lost or behind, and how it can knock your enthusiasm for a subject. I like to start with basic grammar, and usually the student and I work our way through the textbook, catching anything that might have been neglected by the teachers at school. The hectic atmosphere of the classroom sometimes lets foundational grammar and skills fall through the cracks. It’s my job to catch those little pieces and reassure my student that learning Latin and Greek need not be an unpleasant experience, but more like an easygoing cerebral workout which can enhance our general skills as linguists, but also reinforce our cognitive abilities. Additionally, Roman and Greek cultures offer up so many aspects of human life ripe for exploration.
My main priority is the enjoyment of the subject: learning is incredibly satisfying if done thoroughly. I hope I can be of service!

Non-academic Latin lessons. Multilingual teacher with 9 years of experience. Pronunciation, historical linguistics, conceptual semantics.Contrary to popular belief, learning Latin is not like learning the phone book by heart.
I offer you Latin lessons that are unlike any other. There are two types of courses. Here is an analogy to illustrate their respective approaches:
If you take the train back and forth every day and don't have time to wait long at the platform, imagine that you only have two options:
1) Learn the schedules by heart.
2) Note that the train arrives every ten minutes and that a train arrives for example at 7:00 a.m.
In school pedagogy, in study notebooks and in ordinary courses, it is the first approach which is adopted - in the courses that I offer you, it is the second because it is more economical and faster.
My offer is aimed at both students and adults who want to learn the Latin language or deepen their knowledge without time-consuming detours through the insanities of school methods which do not produce results.
Learning is easy but unlearning what has become a bad habit is extremely difficult. All the more important it is to learn the right reflexes as early as possible. With my tailor-made teaching you will accelerate your learning in a positive state of mind.
I offer individual or group Latin lessons (2 to 5 people). The methods are based on cognitive sciences and in particular historical linguistics.
What will not be the subject of the course:
learn lists of verbs;
learn lists of nouns with their gender;
learn words with their translations;
memory card game;
doing school exercises;
follow the program in a notebook;
impose French grammar on the Latin language.
What matters to me in particular:
motivate my student and give him a learning rhythm;
encourage creativity;
make friends with language;
letters and their sounds
strengthen your memory by working on the phonological loop;
teach construction plans instead of having people learn sentences by heart;
explain how the language works to make my student independent as quickly as possible;
breaking preconceived ideas such as the gammatical gender would have a link with the biological gender, the accusative would be a direct complement and the dative an indirect complement, the verbs would be irregular, the declension would be random and therefore to be learned with each verb... ;
place practice at the center and articulate grammar around practice.
In the context of a first course, you can get a well-founded idea of my pedagogy.
I look forward to meeting you.

Oxbridge Classics Admission Application and Test CoachingApplications for Classics at Oxford and Cambridge both involve a language assessment, for which I provide expert tutoring and guidance in as a first-class Classics and English graduate from Oxford.
Classics at Oxford uses the Classics Admissions Test (CAT) for Course I (for students with Latin/Greek to A Level) or the Classical Language Aptitude Test (CLAT) for Course II (for students without Latin/Greek) to decide who will be invited for interview. At Cambridge only candidates shortlisted for interview will be required to take such assessment, which will be a translation exercise for the 3-year course, or a language aptitude interview for the 4-year. All assessments involve careful application of linguistic knowledge, whether of classical languages or English, which I will ensure you are extremely well-prepared to do.
Applicants are also required to submit two pieces of written work prior to interview, which I am able to advise about if requested.

Oxford Classics Graduate offering Latin Language tuition from scratch up to A-Level standardAs a recent Oxford Classics graduate, I am keen to share my love of Latin and the Latin language with any would-be enthusiasts.
I have experience in tutoring Latin from scratch to A-Level equivalent standard.
In these classes, I'll focus on equipping my students with the necessary tools to master grammar and build up their vocabulary repertoire.
We'll focus on strengthening our understanding of the building blocks of the language - noun declensions, verb conjugations, participles and the like - before moving onto more complex syntax such as subjunctive clauses.
My lessons take an active approach so alongside the grammar tables we'll also translate passages of Latin, and I might throw in a fun fact or two!

GCSE: Latin Language and Latin Literature Lessons.I am familiar with many examining boards, such as AQA, OCR and Pearson Edexcel.
My goal is to:
- Provide personalised support to help the student overcome their academic challenges, instilling confidence in the topic.
- Strengthen the student's understanding of exam board 'Assessment Objectives', equipping them to approach exams strategically. (Exams are like a game - knowing the rules makes success easier).
- Enhance writing skills by reinforcing PEA structure (Point, Evidence, Explain) for clear and effective responses.
- Offer practical advice on revision techniques, study tips, and tools to boost the student's performance.
I achieved A* in Latin at GCSE in 2017, without dropping a mark I scored 100% across all four papers (400/400 UMS).
I earned an A in Latin at A-level in 2019.
I was offered a place to read Classics with English Literature at Edinburgh University in 2020. I studied Latin for two years at Edinburgh, before dropping it to complete my undergrad in only English Literature.
I graduated with First-Class MA Honours in English Literature in July 2024.

Living Latin through Comprehensible Input (Contemporary and Medieval Latin)You will learn Latin the way it was meant to be learned - through conversation! Medieval scholars and contemporary language researchers alike advocate the use of dialogues and comprehensible input for language acquisition, and it most certainly works! As opposed to the "memorise grammar rules and then babble them in front of the class" approach that was demonstrated by the infamous "Romanēs eunt domus" scene from Monty Python's "The Life of Brian", you will learn to feel the grammar, so that you will be able to use the different cases of Latin without even thinking about it, just like a native speaker!
For this class we will be using the following books, depending on the learner's level:
Hans Øreberg's "Lingua Latīna per sē Illustrāta"
"Corderiī Colloquia"
Erasmus Rask's "Colloquia Familiaria"
John C. Traupman Conversational Latin for Oral Proficiency
I will be the collocutor and I will answer the learner's questions and explain certain oddities solely in Latin (I will use a second language only when the situation calls for it)
We will also engage in free-form conversations, discussions of the dialogues, of our life experiences etc so that the learner can apply what they learn to real-life situations and expand their vocabulary

Learn (modern) Greek for everyday use, university, tourism with FUN and passion / (ancient) Greek for school and universityI am a native speaker of Greek. I graduated from a Greek high school and, later, the University of Athens where I attended courses in pedagogics, psychology, and linguistics.
During our lessons, I'll help you develop your skills (oral/written, and not only). I'll also try to help you improve your pronunciation and spelling. I assign homework and after I receive it, correct it thoroughly additionally providing a lot of remarks/examples if they are necessary.
I worked at a language center between 2009-2016 where I was a director of studies and taught mainly English as a foreign/second language. Since 2005, when I first started teaching Greek, I have taught children and adults on a variety of language proficiency levels, mainly individually.
I constantly seek progress, meaning that I study further through reading books/articles concerning didactics/methodology and learning difficulties (chiefly dyslexia), observing other teachers as well as attending seminars (online or face-to-face).
During my lessons I use :
- Skype/Whatsapp/Messenger to connect with you,
- Google Docs to keep notes, which you can check at any time and they are yours to keep,
- sketch board me to make mind maps to show connections between ideas, etc.
- books, PPP, word docs, diagrams, pics, etc.
- pronunciation/spelling/grammar games,
- authentic materials were taken from websites.
I adore my profession and desire each and every one of my students be satisfied with the lesson. That's why I make sure the atmosphere is stress-free and nice. I also want my lessons to be as effective and close to real-life needs as possible. Therefore, I make sure they are well-prepared, although they can be altered at any point, should such an opportunity arise. I like explaining things in a variety of ways as well as make use of dictionaries, diagrams, etc. When it comes to students who want to obtain certificates, I am very demanding.
What can I teach?
- I would love to help you improve/develop all language skills (speaking/writing-listening/reading + grammar/vocabulary/pronunciation),
- I would love to help you prepare for state certificates such as A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2.
- I would love to help you with homework and assignments (literature, history) from school and university (but please contact me about that IN ADVANCE).
Regarding Ancient Greek, I can help you with commentaries/translations/grammar/syntax:
- Socrates, Plato, Aristotle,
- Homer, Aeschylus, Euripides, Sophocles, Sappho,
- Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon.

1st Class Cambridge Graduate – Latin & Ancient Greek ClassesFlexibility is central to my approach, and I will adapt our lesson plans to your specific needs and objectives. I have a deep knowledge of Latin and Greek linguistics, and offer tuition to all levels from Beginner, through GCSE and A-Level, up to those studying Classics at university.
In our first lesson, we'll get to know each other and discuss your objectives and style of learning - I want to understand how you like to learn, what you find easy, and what you find difficult. And from there, we'll develop a well-prepared, interesting and valuable lesson plan.
If learning a language is the scariest thing in the world to you, don't worry! I will always be a friendly, patient and devoted tutor. I have experience tutoring students in 4 different languages over the past 5 years. I understand the importance of sympathy and patience in teaching, and will always be able to slow down or speed up the course of learning as required. Latin and Greek are not easy, but with an experienced and friendly teacher, it can be a brilliant experience!
I'm happy to run lessons of any length, and at any frequency.
At various times in my life I've personally tried to learn almost 20 different languages (though Latin and Greek remain my favourites!), so I know very well how it feels to be staring at a page full of weird-looking words, and not have a clue where to start. Helping people to cut through the chaos, and see the wild beauty of complex languages like Latin and Greek, is one of the most satisfying feelings I've had through my years of tutoring both children and adults. My mission as a tutor will always be more than just to build your ability in these languages, it will be to build your love of them as well.
Carlotta
Latin tutoring for secondary students (Dutch / Latin / English)Salvē, my name is Carlotta and I have 7 years of experience in tutoring. These lessons are now online, which in my experience does not lower the quality or results at all. I followed courses at Schola Latīna, an Italian private school that uses the comprehensible input (CI) method. This means that all lessons are taught exclusively in the target language, which allows me to not only translate Latin, but also speak and write it. Since no Flemish school expects active language proficiency, I will of course not do this unasked during lessons ;)
In practice the same problems always return: difficulties with translation, difficulties with memorization of sequences and vocabulary, lack of motivation or fun.
When such a fantastic profession is experienced as difficult, it is only logical that motivation also drops. Whatever the problem, Latin itself is a perfectly feasible subject. I also tutored mathematics and noticed that students only have fun when they are no longer struggling, which is what we are working towards :)
My goal is to be less needed as quickly as possible by learning and practicing strategies. When you contact us, please state the year the student is in. I provide extra customized material!
Cūrā ut valeās,
Carlotta
