Latin Class and Western History Tutoring (SAT and Interests)

Contrary to popular belief, learning Latin is not like learning the phone book by heart. I offer you Latin lessons that are unlike any other. There are two types of courses. Here is an analogy to illustrate their respective approaches: If you take the train back and forth every day and don't have time to wait long at the platform, imagine that you only have two options: 1) Learn the schedules by heart. 2) Note that the train arrives every ten minutes and that a train arrives for example at 7:00 a.m. In school pedagogy, in study notebooks and in ordinary courses, it is the first approach which is adopted - in the courses that I offer you, it is the second because it is more economical and faster. My offer is aimed at both students and adults who want to learn the Latin language or deepen their knowledge without time-consuming detours through the insanities of school methods which do not produce results. Learning is easy but unlearning what has become a bad habit is extremely difficult. All the more important it is to learn the right reflexes as early as possible. With my tailor-made teaching you will accelerate your learning in a positive state of mind. I offer individual or group Latin lessons (2 to 5 people). The methods are based on cognitive sciences and in particular historical linguistics. What will not be the subject of the course: learn lists of verbs; learn lists of nouns with their gender; learn words with their translations; memory card game; doing school exercises; follow the program in a notebook; impose French grammar on the Latin language. What matters to me in particular: motivate my student and give him a learning rhythm; encourage creativity; make friends with language; letters and their sounds strengthen your memory by working on the phonological loop; teach construction plans instead of having people learn sentences by heart; explain how the language works to make my student independent as quickly as possible; breaking preconceived ideas such as the gammatical gender would have a link with the biological gender, the accusative would be a direct complement and the dative an indirect complement, the verbs would be irregular, the declension would be random and therefore to be learned with each verb... ; place practice at the center and articulate grammar around practice. You will learn Latin the way it was meant to be learned - through conversation! Medieval scholars and contemporary language researchers alike advocate the use of dialogues and comprehensible input for language acquisition, and it most certainly works! As opposed to the "memorise grammar rules and then babble them in front of the class" approach that was demonstrated by the infamous "Romanēs eunt domus" scene from Monty Python's "The Life of Brian", you will learn to feel the grammar, so that you will be able to use the different cases of Latin without even thinking about it, just like a native speaker! For this class we will be using the following books, depending on the learner's level: Hans Øreberg's "Lingua Latīna per sē Illustrāta" "Corderiī Colloquia" Erasmus Rask's "Colloquia Familiaria" John C. Traupman Conversational Latin for Oral Proficiency I will be the collocutor and I will answer the learner's questions and explain certain oddities solely in Latin (I will use a second language only when the situation calls for it) We will also engage in free-form conversations, discussions of the dialogues, of our life experiences etc so that the learner can apply what they learn to real-life situations and expand their vocabulary

As a recent Oxford Classics graduate, I am keen to share my love of Latin and the Latin language with any would-be enthusiasts. I have experience in tutoring Latin from scratch to A-Level equivalent standard. In these classes, I'll focus on equipping my students with the necessary tools to master grammar and build up their vocabulary repertoire. We'll focus on strengthening our understanding of the building blocks of the language - noun declensions, verb conjugations, participles and the like - before moving onto more complex syntax such as subjunctive clauses. With this tutoring class, my aim is to help the student to reach a level of understand of historical event with a methodology that is appropriate for the student and helps him/her. It can be a revision of basic notions seen in school or it can be the preparation of an exam .

Salvē, my name is Carlotta and I have 7 years of experience in tutoring. These lessons are now online, which in my experience does not lower the quality or results at all. I followed courses at Schola Latīna, an Italian private school that uses the comprehensible input (CI) method. This means that all lessons are taught exclusively in the target language, which allows me to not only translate Latin, but also speak and write it. Since no Flemish school expects active language proficiency, I will of course not do this unasked during lessons ;) In practice the same problems always return: difficulties with translation, difficulties with memorization of sequences and vocabulary, lack of motivation or fun. When such a fantastic profession is experienced as difficult, it is only logical that motivation also drops. Whatever the problem, Latin itself is a perfectly feasible subject. I also tutored mathematics and noticed that students only have fun when they are no longer struggling, which is what we are working towards :) My goal is to be less needed as quickly as possible by learning and practicing strategies. I studied Latin for 6 years (high school and university) and read the works of (among others) : -Ovidius -Virgil -Horace -Civero -Catullus I assign homework and after I receive it, correct it thoroughly additionally providing a lot of remarks/examples if they are necessary. During my lessons I use : - Skype/Whatsapp/Messenger to connect with you, - Google Docs to keep notes, which you can check at any time and they are yours to keep, - sketch board me to make mind maps to show connections between ideas, etc. - books, PPP, word docs, diagrams, pics, etc. I adore my profession and desire each and every one of my students be satisfied with the lesson. History is what connects the present to the past and helps us to predict the future. In my class, you will learn modern european history, in particular the history of Germany from 1918 to 1989. You will be taught by a world class teacher that has studied European history to a high level, gaining an A in the subject. The key aspects of the history of Germany will be broken down into manageable chunks for students to understand more easily. Associate professor, Doctor of Letters (Paris IV Sorbonne), teaches Latin at all levels. This course is aimed at anyone wishing to learn or relearn the Latin language, progressively access literature, history, philosophy, ancient sciences, and approach Latin culture. Learning the Latin language presupposes a few solid bases of French grammar that we review of course if necessary, before installing Latin grammatical knowledge. He won a Government of Uganda Scholarship to pursue his undergraduate studies at Gulu University, gaining a first-class degree in Bachelor of Arts Education (History and Economics). Isa is also a graduate of the University of Cambridge, where he studied for an MPhil in African Studies as a Commonwealth Scholar. My history classes are suitable for the 10, 11, 12, and 13-year-old UK and IGCSE students (Cambridge International Curriculum) and AS and A-Level students (UK and Cambridge International). I will provide and prepare the texts, and we will work through them together in order to ensure maximum understanding. Authors include Virgil, Ovid, Catullus, Cicero, Nepos, and others.
