Violin and Viola lessons for beginner - advanced playersI offer in person and online lessons in violin and viola. I am based in Neukölln, Berlin.
I have taught violin and viola in the UK for leading national organisations including Opera North, In harmony and Orchestras for All. I have over 10 years of private and school based teaching experience and have taught students from aged 4 to adults. I also ran an outreach music and arts project in the UK delivering music and art workshops in schools and art galleries as well as online, the project was recognised with two national awards from Deutsche Bank and UnLtd. I have led and conducted school string ensembles and set up beginner string programs for Harrogate Music School, Cardiff Young Strings and The Strings Club, Birmingham.
My teaching style incorporates aspects of Dalcroze and Kodaly methodology as well as improvisation and collaborative composition. I develop a bespoke approach alongside each student to ensure they are able to get the most out of their lessons and make lessons enjoyable. My lessons focus on developing technique and skills required to play music the student has chosen and I incorporate play and games into lessons to enable the most effective learning. I work mostly in classical, improvisation and new music contexts but can provide lessons in all genres.
Lessons are in English. Regular, irregular and one-off lessons are possible. I teach from beginner-advanced.

TESTIMONIALS:
"My son has had Josh as a guitar tutor for 6 years. I can highly recommend him. He has a fantastic manner and rapport with his students. He is an exceptionally skilled guitar player and tutor. My son has made phenomenal progress with Josh and has enjoyed working with Josh towards his Trinity Grades in classical guitar. In addition, Josh has motivated my son to compose his own music - with fabulous results." Amanda
"Josh is very talented. He is flexible about what we play and finds things that suit my ability. He creates a fun environment to learn." Arthur, aged 14
"Josh has been teaching my son electric and electro-acoustic guitar for a year. His stimulating and relaxed approach means that I find my son plays his guitar on a daily basis just because he enjoys it, yet he is still covering quite a lot of technical stuff." Polly
"My 12-year old daughter has been taking guitar classes with Joshua Geffin for over a year now. Previously she tried a couple of different instruments and music teachers but even though she is very musical and loves music, she would get bored and lose interest after a while. Josh’s inspirational and creative approach to teaching changed all this. She became passionate about playing her guitar, singing and writing her own music. Practicing is no longer a chore but fun and she looks forward to her class every week. In a relatively short period she made remarkable progress and has recently won a full music scholarship at Kingsdale." Duska
"I took up the guitar in my 30s and am far from a natural musician! I’ve had a few teachers – all brilliant guitarists - but none have quite combined the same high level of patience, encouragement and flexibility as Josh. He let’s me play music I love and progress at my own pace. As a ‘mature’ student with an incredibly busy job, it is important that I don’t feel under pressure if I haven’t played between lessons. Josh is completely understanding of this and the fact that he teaches at my home is a massive bonus. He is a natural and talented teacher and I would not hesitate to recommend his lessons to anyone of any level." Jeanette
"I have been having lessons with Josh for around 2 years now. He has really helped develop and improve the quality of my playing and also my appreciation of music as a whole and I am very happy with my progress. The lessons are always relaxed and enjoyable, but also professional with a focus and tailor-made according to my own personal goals, which I like. I prefer to concentrate on learning songs and to experiment with a variety of genres. Josh helps me do that and he keeps things fun by mixing in improvisation sessions and technique development to bring me on and help me improve as a player." Pete

Guitar lessons Electric, Acoustic, Utrecht Alwin The guitar lessons are partly theory and partly practice. During the first guitar lesson I first look at the starting level. This is different for each guitar student. You can follow guitar lessons for both the acoustic guitar and the electric guitar. With electric guitar lessons, developing your own sound using guitar effects is also part of the guitar lesson.

Learn how to play the violin or the viola and how to read musicFeeling good with your body and listening to it, understanding where the sound comes from and how to produce it, learning the basics and how to read the notes and the score, learning tricks and daily exercises without the instrument to help you develop your agility and muscles, playing together duets to get closer to the chamber music world and to learn how to listen and collaborate with others. I think it's important to listen also to the student's requests and desires; if you have a tune or a piece that you would love to play we can work on it together.
Folk music is also an interesting way through which we can get closer to the instrument and the music world, playing traditional dances from different countries and discovering different music languages.
As every person has his own physiognomy and musculature, we will try to find together a correct and comfortable posture that better suits the student to create a connection with the instrument. Warming-up and taking care of our body is part of a musician's life (beginner, amateur or professional) and it is important to prevent injuries and muscle pain. Unfortunately this aspect is not often taken into account and for this reason I aim to transmit this value to my students.

Private Violin/Viola Lessons for Every Type of LearnerHow do you learn and what are your goals in learning music? I aim to make learning music as interesting and accessible as possible. I use a scaffolded approach to teaching that pairs physically sustainable playing techniques (Alexander Technique) with built-upon previous knowledge and interests. I hold MM and BM degrees from New York University and The University of Iowa and studied with Melissa White and Gregory Fulkerson for the entirety of my Masters of Music at New York University.
I am a violinist and violist currently living and working in New York City. I have played in such venues as Lincoln Center Summer Stages, Carnegie Hall, Duomo di Orvieto, among others. I grew up playing bluegrass with my parents and now genre-hop among traditional classical music, contemporary classical, pop, singer-songwriter, musical theater, jazz, avant-garde, and folk. For these reasons and more, I enjoy tailoring the repertoire and technique education to the student's goals and interests. I have taught 3 year olds, elementary kids, high schoolers, college students, and adult learners, and enjoyed all within the age range for various reasons.
