RECORDER LESSONS FOR ALL AGES & LEVELS, by a very experienced and enthusiastic teacher

THE RECORDER
The recorder, or flauta doce/de bisel, flauto dolce/dritto, flûte à bec, flauta dulce/de pico, Blockflöte, blokfluit... is an instrument with a lovely sound and a long history. It has been present in my life for 35 years now, and I still find it just as fascinating. It is a practical instrument, easy to carry around, and requires little financial investment at the start, but still opens up a world of possibilities and joy in music making.

WHO I AM
My name is Inês and I'm a professional recorder player, specialized in Baroque music. Music making for me is about communicating; with the audience, with colleagues, with another era, and with myself. Next to my life as a performing musician, I very much enjoy being a teacher (and also a researcher).

MY QUALIFICATIONS
I'm an active performer in some of the most renowned Early Music ensembles in the Netherlands, and with these fantastic colleagues I've played throughout Europe, Asia and Brazil at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals (e.g. Concertgebouw, Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Utrecht Festival Oude Muziek, TivoliVredenburg, Kölner Philharmonie, Izumi Hall).

I hold a PhD in Music from Leiden University, and Bachelor's, Master's and teaching diplomas from the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, where I've been teaching since 2012. I am also a certified examiner for higher education in The Netherlands (Basiskwalificatie Didactische Bekwaamheid en Basiskwalificatie Examinering voor HBO-docenten).

MY TEACHING STYLE
I have been a teacher for over 18 years, guiding students of all ages and levels, from pre-school beginners to conservatory level and experienced amateurs; I equally enjoy teaching children and adults.

I am flexible with my methodology, so together we will find the best way for the student to develop whilst enjoying making music. In a typical lesson we will work on sound, rhythm, musicality, discuss technical issues, learn about ensemble playing etc. If you are interested, we can also talk about differences in musical styles, repertoire and learn about the interesting history of the instrument.

Extra information

If you have to change the date of a lesson, please let me know with as much advance as possible so we can find another date. Lessons should be paid for at least 24 hours before. If you have to cancel last minute, for illness or other emergencies, let me know at least 6 hours before the lesson was scheduled, so we can still find another moment. Otherwise I count with your understanding that the lesson will not be rescheduled and the amount paid will not be reimbursed.

Music making for me is about communicating; with the audience, with colleagues, with another era, and with myself. Next to my life as a performing musician, I very much enjoy being a teacher (and also a researcher). I'm praised for my refinement, virtuosism and unique timbre, and am known for blending these qualities as a performer with my engaging work as a researcher and teacher.

Education

I hold a PhD in Music from Leiden University, and Bachelor's, Master's and teaching diplomas from the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. I am also a certified examiner for higher education in The Netherlands (Basiskwalificatie Didactische Bekwaamheid en Basiskwalificatie Examinering voor HBO-docenten).

Experience / Qualifications

I'm the artistic director of La Cicala and co-founder of the duo Inês & Claudio Ribeiro, New Collegium, and Schifanoia. I performs regularly as a soloist and in chamber and orchestral formations throughout Europe, Asia, Peru and her native Brazil, with ensembles such as the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Concerto Köln. I have won international prizes in Early Music at the International Competition Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli (2010), Premio Bonporti (2011) and Van Wassenaer Competition (2016), both as a soloist and with her ensembles. I have recorded for Passacaille, Challenge Classics, ORF Edition Alte Musik, Channel Classics, Ramée/Outhere and Sony Classical, winning awards such as Diapason d'Or (July 2019) and Toccata CD des Monats (October 2019).

I have had scholarly articles, essays and reviews published at the prestigious Journal of the American Musical Instrument Society, Recercare, Tibia, Early Music America Magazine, Music+Practice and Blokfluitist. I was a resident academic researcher at the Cini Foundation/Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi in 2016 (thanks to a 'Vilma & Olivo Andreazza' scholarship) and in 2018 enjoyed an artistic residency at the Emily Harvey Foundation, both in Venice. Since 2012, I'm a Teacher and Research Supervisor for the Master Program of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, where in 2019 I was asked to take the position of ad interim Educational Coordinator of the Early Music Department. I have been invited to teach masterclasses at the Royal College of Music in London, Universidad Nacional de Música in Lima and at the Festival Internacional de Música Antiga e Música Colonial Brasileira, organized by the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora.

Guitar workshops: personalized lessons / private training
Folk or classical acoustic guitar. The teaching philosophy is adapted to the level of each individual, according to the pace of work and motivation. For example, for beginners: Technique of the plectrum or fingers, coordination and correction of the right and left hand. Learning basic chords, simple themes, simple rhythms, reading tablatures (...). For intermediaries: development of rhythm, construction of chords, writing of tablatures, basic notions of harmony (...). Depending on your goals, you can learn, if you wish, to play 60 to 80% of current music from the first lessons, which often use the same chords and the same techniques. The objectives take into consideration the following points: -Study of various playing techniques, chords, harmony, music of your choice, rhythm, with reading of tablature, teaching structured around the repertoire you like, technique of developing the musical ear - Discovery of the neck, notes and basic positions of open chords - Left / right hand coordination and rhythm exercises for the right hand - Learning of different pieces of your choice - Left hand control exercises, speed and precision - Learning arpeggios - Work around muscle memory - Learning improvisation, musical play with others - Ear training: use your ears to find chords, melodies, sounds and techniques used -Spend a pleasant moment of exchange, without unnecessary institutional pressure, while obtaining concrete results -Understand and discover the many facets of an exciting and user-friendly instrument - Benefit from personalized advice on your posture and certain pitfalls to avoid when starting alone -Adjust and clarify your self-taught knowledge - Learn tablatures / tabs & in English. Note : - Possibility to use the guitar available on site, during the test phase. - As our teacher is also a singing teacher, it is possible to combine the two disciplines: guitar + vocal instrument, and to work on synchronization, style and accuracy. - Possibility of offering this course (birthday, party, Christmas, event ...) to the person of your choice. THE TEACHER : Trained in Grande Ecole post-preparatory classes & Ivy League university in the United States, our teacher has specialized and has worked for more than 15 years, in Europe and North America, in the field, in renowned international public and private establishments, with careful pedagogy and methodology as the watchwords. PLACES : - Locations: Geneva-Lausanne-Friborg-Neuchâtel-Montreux-Bâle-Sion-Sierre-Morges-Bienne. But currently, only by videoconference in accordance with national recommendations on Covid. These sessions also seem to be perfectly unanimous since they have the advantages of direct (example: quality of the interaction), without its disadvantages (ex: loss of travel time), with additional advantages (ex: of notes on the chat, which can be reread afterwards). In this context, these videoconference sessions for which you have requested me, seem to arouse a certain enthusiasm (and a certain enthusiasm). At your request, I therefore continue to offer them.

Flute and Music Theory tuition for students of all levels
I have played the flute for more than 20 years, and have been teaching since 2011. I offer flute lessons to children aged 8 and up, and adults at all levels from beginners to post Grade 8. I also teach recorder to younger beginners- I find this is a good stepping stone for younger children as it's more comfortable for smaller beginners to hold, and easier to make a sound on. Learn to pass exams or just for fun- many of my students achieve highly in ABRSM and Trinity grades, but some prefer not to take exams and this is fine too. Whatever your level, one to one tuition means that I can tailor my teaching to your needs as a flute player, and my teaching takes into account the reasons you learn an instrument, encompassing a wide variety of repertoire. I also teach music theory- lots of students come to me to help prepare for Grade 5 theory, and I also teach higher theory grades.

Piano: Can teach coordination exercises, learn pieces that the student has chosen according to their level and play with one or two hands (bonus for anything related to improvisation) DJ: As I know that the world of DJs is a wild fauna where no one gives you any pointers, I can guide you through this fabulous universe by showing you how to master a turntable, what a DJ needs, etc.

INDIAN CLASSICAL or Singing for beginner VOCAL. or ESRAJ
I have over 20 years of experience in vocal performance and am currently a dedicated learner of Indian classical vocal music and Esraj. I have also had the opportunity to perform in India, gaining valuable experience and deepening my connection to the art. Singing is my passion, and I am committed to supporting those who share the same dedication and love for music. Born and raised in Japan, I was introduced to music at an early age and have spent years exploring various vocal techniques and musical traditions. While my foundation is in contemporary and traditional styles, my journey led me to Indian classical music, where I continue to refine my skills under esteemed mentors. This pursuit has allowed me to immerse myself in a rich and intricate musical tradition, enhancing both my vocal technique and artistic expression. Alongside performance, I am passionate about teaching and sharing my knowledge with others. Whether you want to deepen your understanding of vocal music, explore Indian classical techniques, or sing in Japanese, I am here to support your journey. If you have a song you’d like to sing in Japanese, I can help you with pronunciation, phrasing, and emotional expression. We can also work on vocal training together to develop your range, breath control, and confidence. In addition to teaching, I continue to perform and collaborate with artists across different genres, bridging musical traditions and fostering cross-cultural connections. My goal is to create a space where music becomes a powerful tool for self-expression, creativity, and personal growth. Let’s explore your potential together and bring your musical aspirations to life!

Cello and music classes - in classical or modern style (for all levels)
Together we can develop your skill as a cello player, building a strong technical and musical foundation. We will find a learning style that best suits you. We can study the cello repertoire and traditional techniques and we can also explore the cello in less traditional ways - improvising, writing music, using electronics and combining it with other instruments.

Saxophone lessons for all levels! (Online or at your place)
With beginner saxophone students, we will first work on proper instrument holding and posture. Then, before blowing into the saxophone, we will practice long-tone exercises using the mouthpiece. Once comfortable with these fundamentals, we will start producing sound from the instrument and learning the notes. We will focus on long-tone exercises to develop control and consistency. We gradually start incorporating short exercises or simple melodies as the student progresses. Learning and progressing on an instrument mostly depends on the student's dedication and practice habits. If you love music and commit time to it, you can reach a good level in a short period!
