In this simple, easy to understand beginning photography course, students will learn the basics and fundamentals of using a camera. We will be talking about how a camera works, what parts of the camera are used, how to edit photos, composition, and anything else that may supplement our desires! Whether you have your own personal DSLR or just the camera on your phone, all these fundamentals will still apply! Additionally, for students who want me to give them hands on experience, we can schedule times to go out and take our own photos! This online photography course is designed for anyone looking to build a more thoughtful, intentional approach to image-making. Whether you're starting out or refining your practice, the class focuses on photography as both a technical craft and a form of personal or documentary expression. You'll be encouraged to develop your own visual language through a mix of technical guidance, creative exercises, and reflective assignments. The course is designed to be accessible, supportive, and grounded in curiosity rather than perfectionism. You can work with any camera you have access to, including smartphones. Ideal for artists, students, and anyone interested in using photography to explore the world around them with more clarity and intention. I bring over 10 years photographic experience to the table, with both a BA (HONS) from UAL and MA degree in photography from the Royal College of Art. I am also happy to help with art school applications and crafting artist statements, regardless of artistic medium. I am particularly interested in engaging with people who work with writing and prose in their practice, or who are looking/seeking to incorporate this into their photography projects.

I hold a PhD in Art and Communication with Photography as my field of specialism and a PGCE teaching certificate in Post Compulsory Education. At the same time I am a practising photographic artist with an interest in abstract photography. I have a comprehensive understanding of contemporary photographic practices and of theoretical approaches to the subject, and also have a strong technical grounding both in traditional and in digital processes. I am experienced in all stages of the development of photographic projects, from early conceptualisation through to printing and exhibiting.I have exhibited nationally and internationally in both solo and group shows. My selection for the Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2008 Exhibition in Liverpool and London is one highlight among them. As an artist and teacher I insist on the highest professional standards and I emphasise clear and direct communication and honesty throughout. I have been teaching photography since 2009. I offer private lessons to photography students and any other individuals who would be interested in 'how to'/technical skills sessions or in developing a photographic body of work and would be in need for some expert advice. Rigorous training in the processes of writing and editing will accompany one-on-one guidance from the Senior Editors and mentors including myself, and involve rewriting and studying real submissions across fiction, humour, commentary, poetry and more. The camera has long since become my best ally when I go out into nature, and I no longer contemplate going without it. Capturing details, the light of the sunset, the inhabitants of the forest, or the immensity of the night sky is my way of being present and connecting with the environment that surrounds me. After working as a Northern Lights guide and photographer, I have noticed that quite a few people come with their cameras hoping to capture an aurora borealis, but without any prior experience in night photography. This art requires patience, technique and practice, especially when it comes to the Northern Lights where the light is constantly changing. It is because of this experience that I decided to open this service.
