Guitar lessons in Crouch End / Highgate / north London

I teach every little thing a guitarist should know, like the correct hand techniques, reading music, and music theory (in a very practical way). And can teach all styles, all guitars and all levels.

But most of all, my biggest passion and mission in life is to help you to be more creative and expressive. And the guitar is the best way to achieve it, of course.

I encourage all my students to write music, improvise, and find their own path, voice, and sound on the guitar. Creating music is not only really fun, but it’s also the most valuable way to learn guitar and understand music on a deeper level.

My current guitar students range from complete beginners to advanced guitarists. They want to embrace the joy of music in their lives and unlock their creative potential by improvising, songwriting, and music composing.
Some of them work towards their diplomas and concerts, and I’m happy to support them along the journey and get great results.

I believe that there are many paths to learning guitar, and I accommodate and design a plan according to your individual goals and needs. In the literature, it’s called “student-led”, and I am firmly convinced that this is the most suitable way to learn.

About Me

You’ve reached this page probably because you searched for “Guitar lessons north London”. Great! I am a guitar teacher in north London!

The guitar is objectively the most amazing musical instrument there is! And I love showing aspiring guitarists and musicians the sheer magic it can produce.

I’ve been teaching since 2002 and was happy to help guitar players in north London and around the world to take their first steps on the guitar or to improve their current skills. It’s always amazing to see the transformation.

As a teacher, I strive to help you reach whatever goals you may have on the guitar and become the best version of your creative self.

I teach every little thing a guitarist should know, like the correct hand techniques, reading music, and music theory (in a very practical way). And can teach all styles, all guitars and all levels.

I picked up a guitar in 1991. So yeah, I’ve been playing for quite some time… Back then, I had some amazing guitar teachers who taught and inspired me so much.

One of them, Gilad Benamram (who’s now a famous film and TV composer), left the greatest impact on me. So when I became a guitar teacher, I wanted to adopt his unique teaching approach.

His method was to give creative guitar challenges and his positive feedback was very motivating and encouraged me to achieve more and more. And that’s my ultimate goal when I teach guitar.

Once I reached a decent level, I started to collaborate and play with other musicians, bands and ensembles. So over the years, I gained experience on stage as a performing guitarist and in the studio as a session player and recording artist.

Despite getting to a pro level, I kept on studying different aspects of guitar playing and music. I still do so until this very day as learning and living music is an ongoing part of my life.

I give guitar lessons in north London – Crouch End, Highgate area. And am a registered guitar teacher in RGT@LCM – the Registry of Guitar Tutors at the London College of Music.

Since Covid, I’ve been teaching online guitar lessons and using a unique online studio. This studio is designed for music lessons and the audio quality is much better than Zoom. You can actually hear two guitars playing at the same time!

On my online guitar studio, I can offer my services to my students who live across the world, from Portland to Singapore.

Of course, that’s how I also teach my London-based students. Even now, in 2022, they find this method efficient. There’s no travel time, no lateness, and the lessons’ recaps are stored in their own space in the online guitar studio. The studio is also a hosting platform where my students can upload videos and files to get my feedback in-between lessons.

FAQ

Q: Do you take complete beginners?
A: Yes. I’m happy to take beginners. Sometimes, I even prefer beginners as I can teach you the right techniques straight away, without the need to break bad old habits. Usually, self-taught students or students of inadequate teachers acquire flawed right and left-hand techniques, unfortunately.

Q: What is your method of teaching guitar?
A: I build a custom-made programme that would fit to your goals and needs. If you think you don’t have any goals and just want to play a bit and have fun, that’s also an honourable goal and I’ll just aim toward that. Just let me know what kind of music you’re into. I usually incorporate a bit of music theory in my lessons as well as encourage my students to create music of their own.

Q: What kind of styles and genres do you teach?
A: Over the years I’ve dubbed with almost any possible music genre and style there is. Therefore, I can teach almost everything. From classical guitar grade exam preparations, through acoustic singer-songwriter songs, to electric guitar shredding.

Q: What is expected of me as a student?
A: Three important things: 1) practice, 2) practice, and 3) more practice. You need a minimum of 10 minutes a day to practice, and I’m sure you can find that time. I also teach how to practice without the guitar! My philosophy (based on research) is that daily 10-minute guitar practice is better than playing once a week for two hours. It’s because you want to make a habit out of it and bring music to your life.
There’s no other alternative or a hidden secret to getting better at guitar quickly yet I’m afraid. When we’ll become cyborgs it might change…

Q: Do you have a cancellation policy?
A: Yes. I understand that there are unexpected events that can cause cancellations, but any disruption affects the consistency and standards of the learning experience for both the student and the teacher. Therefore, I will use the time of any cancelled session to plan, film and upload a new personalised lesson for you instead.

Testimonials from guitar students:

I had been meaning to get Guitar lessons for many years, and am so glad I finally did it and chose Udi. I have been getting lessons from Udi in person for about 7 months and recently online and can highly recommend both methods, the online lessons are great to allow me to keep progressing whilst the lockdown is in place. After quite a bit of searching online for a teacher in North London who would teach flamenco as well as other styles of guitar, I came across Udi’s site, the reviews speak for themselves. I have been learning a mixture of flamenco, and rock from bands which I enjoy listening to. Udi can teach a wide range of styles and has a deep understanding of music. He breaks down the lessons into a way which I can understand and progress as well as helping me to construct my practicing to fit into a busy lifestyle. He also encourages me to take a video of him summarising the lesson each week which really helps make the most of the lesson whilst I’m practicing. Udi is patient and takes the time to explain the theory behind the music if this is of interest, he has good humour and is passionate about what he teaches. I feel that I have just scratched the surface of what I can learn.

🎼Kodaly Music Theory Method at The Hap'ning Place N8
At The Hap'ning Place we offer Kodaly Music Theory Lessons to all ages. The Kodaly Method is an extremely successful way to learn musicianship; initially with the instrument you are born with (your voice!!) Kodály's concepts are based on teaching, learning and understanding music through the experience of singing, giving direct access to the world of music with the most universal instrument. The Kodály approach to music education is student centered and skills are taught in a logical, sequential manner. These can be individual lessons, as a part of your instrumental training or taken as a separate class. If there are enough students, we will offer a group class and reduce the rate per person. For more information and available times for your next one to one lesson, please get in touch.

Songwriters workshop (songs ideas, lyrics, chords)
Are you musical trained, confident enough with your instrument but finding frustrating coming up with your own compositions? Finding difficult to get idea for a new song, need suggestions for your lyrics, or just a simple understanding on a song structure? This class is based in songwriting and musical performance. I will provide any tips and suggestion to get a song done and don't get stuck between lyrics or chords. I'll be focussing in songwriting structure across different genre, pop, folk, blues, jazz. I will be also structuring the classes giving home exercise working on new sketches every week across those different genres, and diverse themes. Once the song will be completed I'll give any sort of advice on how to perform a song to an audience. How to structure a show and organise you band if you have one. During the lesson I'll be using piano as main instrument and singing. I am also confident in guitar if required. Songwriting and performance for me are quite related. At the same time I can also give advice and teach just one or the other if required. Please follow below more information about myself.

Music Fundamentals: Music Theory & Music Appreciation
Music Fundamentals: Music Theory is an intro-level class that breaks down the building blocks of music. You’ll learn how to read music, understand rhythm, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, and basic harmony. It’s all about giving you the tools to understand how music is written, played, and structured—whether you’re composing, performing, or just trying to make sense of what’s on the page. Think of it as learning the grammar and vocabulary of the music language.

Let’s learn basics of guitar.
Guitar Basics The guitar is a versatile and popular stringed musical instrument, widely used across genres like rock, pop, blues, classical, and more. Understanding the basics is essential for beginners to start playing and progress effectively. Here’s a concise overview: 1. Parts of the Guitar • Body: The main part, which amplifies sound in acoustic guitars or houses electronics in electric ones. • Neck: The long, thin section where the fretboard is located, used for pressing strings to form notes. • Fretboard: A flat surface with metal frets, dividing the neck into segments for different pitches. • Headstock: At the end of the neck, it holds the tuning pegs to adjust string tension. • Strings: Typically six, labeled (from thickest to thinnest) E (low), A, D, G, B, and E (high). • Bridge: Anchors the strings to the body, transferring vibrations to produce sound. 2. Types of Guitars • Acoustic: Produces sound naturally via the hollow body; ideal for folk, country, and classical. • Electric: Relies on an amplifier and pickups to produce sound; common in rock, jazz, and metal. • Classical: Features nylon strings, suited for classical and fingerstyle playing. • Bass: A four-string variant for lower pitches, used to anchor rhythm and harmony. 3. Tuning Standard tuning for a six-string guitar is E-A-D-G-B-E. Use a tuner (electronic or app-based) to adjust each string’s pitch by turning the tuning pegs. A properly tuned guitar ensures notes and chords sound correct. 4. Basic Techniques • Holding the Guitar: Sit with the guitar resting on your dominant leg (right leg for right-handed players), keeping the neck slightly tilted upward. For electric, a strap allows standing. • Fretting: Press strings down on the fretboard with your fingertips (left hand for right-handed players) to change notes. Use light but firm pressure just behind the fret. • Strumming/Picking: Use a pick or fingersਸ System: your fingers to strum or pluck the strings with your right hand. Start with simple patterns. 5. Chords and Notes • Chords: Combinations of notes played together. Beginners often start with open chords like C, G, D, A, and E, using multiple fingers to press strings. • Notes: Single pitches, found by pressing a string on a specific fret. Practice simple scales like the major or minor pentatonic.

Jim
Electronic Music Production – Ableton Live, Synthesis, Sound Design, Composition, Mixing, Mastering, and Live Performance
Hi, my name is Jim. I'm an electronic music producer with a Master’s degree in Music from the Fontys Academy of Arts (Rockacademie) in Tilburg, Netherlands. Music has always been my way of exploring the world — through raw field recordings, synthesis, and emotional storytelling. Over the past 12 years, I’ve developed a complete, self-sufficient creative process: from concept to composition, sound design to vocal production, mixing, mastering, and live performance. I’m passionate about helping others gain those same end-to-end technical skills — so they can bring their own musical vision fully to life. As Malvae, I’ve written, sung, recorded, produced, mixed, mastered, and performed all of my work. My music reached #17 in the Spotify Viral 50 charts in the USA, gathered millions of streams, and featured in international film productions including King of the Streets and Netflix’s Terrace House Japan. One of the most formative moments in my career was my Amazonas album project, where I traveled into the Amazon rainforest to record and manipulate natural sounds. 90% of that album was created entirely from these field recordings, reshaped through granular synthesis and advanced sound design into a cohesive sonic journey. That experience deeply shaped how I approach my music and how I teach sound design and composition. I’ve headlined shows at iconic venues like Melkweg Amsterdam with immersive, self-built audiovisual live sets using Ableton Live, modular gear, sequencers, and Resolume for live integrated visuals. I curated my own events and performed at venues like A’dam Tower, OT301. I also teach at studios such as Wisseloord in Hilversum, guiding students through the technical and creative intersections of sound and performance. Selected Works & Collaborations: My EP Like Bees to a Hive began as a soundscape for fashion brand Lobomar’s collection Final Orders, Please, presented at the Amsterdam World Museum. I collaborated with South African poet Julia-Beth Harris, integrating her spoken word into a seamless, atmospheric release. From sequential Prophet 6 textures to ADX1 drum machine layers and detailed field recordings, I handled every layer, from concept through multitrack production to the final live performance in London. My Chrysalis EP, released as a limited-edition heavyweight red vinyl, pushed that even further, combining ethereal vocals, analog grit, and unique textures to craft an emotionally rich release. I personally led every part of the project’s technical and creative execution, from arrangement and vocal production to final mixing, mastering and vinyl press preparation. In addition to my own projects, I’ve worked as a vocal producer and mixing engineer, including on Esther Veen’s EP Before I Go, where I handled recording, complex vocal layering, creative processing, production, multivocal arrangement and final mixing to deliver a polished, high-impact sound. About the lessons: My sessions are fully customised to your experience level, goals and grounded in real-world music production. Whether you’re just getting started or want to deepen your technical ability, you’ll learn how to develop professional workflows and the creative independence to finish what you start. We can explore: - Building advanced music production workflows and creative strategies - Recording, Composition, arrangement, and storytelling through sound - Full-stack mixing and mastering — from bedroom setups to pro-level delivery - Synthesis and sampling — from sound shaping basics to high-level manipulation - Multi vocal production, vocal recording, editing, layering, FX, and creative processing techniques - Translating your music into a compelling live set with Ableton Live - Applying music theory practically in electronic, cinematic, and contemporary music Lessons are available online or in-person at my studio in Amsterdam. For online students, I use high-quality real-time tools that allow us to collaborate with full-resolution audio directly from your DAW — no screen sharing limitations, just real work in real time. My own musical path often started by blending the sounds I encountered in the world, whether from distant rainforests or my own voice , into something personal and expressive. I found my sound that way, and I’d love to help you find yours. (And don’t worry — we won’t have to go to the ends of the earth to do it. I’ll show you how to turn the sounds you already have into something truly your own.) Whether you're just starting out or ready to go deeper, I look forward to helping you grow through structured, creative, and technically grounded electronic music education.

Experienced teacher of Oud and oriental Arabic singing for over 11 years, I am Lebanese and currently residing in Germany. I studied for 8 years at the Lebanese National Conservatory. I taught at the Casa Beethoven Academy in Lebanon and gave private lessons. In addition, I was conductor of the Loubnan Assalam oriental orchestra for over 5 years. My recommendation for learning the Oud is to start with the study of notes and musical notation before tackling pieces. Although some students prefer to play songs directly, understanding the basics of musical notation allows for faster progress in the long run. With determination and hard work, significant progress can be made in a year, allowing one to play simple melodies. Please feel free to leave me a message, I will reply as soon as possible.

John
Professional jazz musician teaching jazz, blues, funk, R&B, pop, rock, latin and classical piano.
I teach online via Zoom, using software which allows you to see the exact keys I'm playing on my keyboard. My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to build from there. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren't inspired enough, so my goal is to instil a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student. Everyone learns differently and has their own pace and rhythm. I have some students who like to have a regular weekly or biweekly lesson, and others who just get in touch once in a while when they have digested the previous lesson and feel ready to build on it. Whatever the case, I am very flexible and we can figure out what works best for you. A bit about me: Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and holding residencies in restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world playing on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I returned to London to complete my master's in jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music, and during this time performed regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and many other venues across the UK. I then spent two years in South America learning about salsa and Cuban music. I now mainly work as a transcriber, writing sheet music for all instruments including full Big Band scores. I have also worked extensively in musical theatre, most recently as musical director for 'Jersey Boys', and on the first US national tour of 'Summer: the Donna Summer Musical'. The video shown below is from my stint playing and directing 'After Midnight', a show set to the music of the Duke Ellington Big Band.
