About Me
Hi there, I'm Joy from the Jazz guitar department of the Royal conservatory of the Hague!I teach guitar and music theory (General and Jazz).
Jazz and Brazilian guitar are the main focuses in my professional field. But I do love all other kinds of music too.
My Jazz guitar approach mostly comes from the time that I studied in the conservatory with the Dutch Jazz guitar giant Martijn van Iterson and Wim Bronnenberg. Plus the approach I invented myself throughout the years.
My Brazilian guitar approach mostly come from the great Brazilian guitar legends Baden Powell and Toquinho. Baden only had one student in his entire life, his son - Marcel Powell. And I got the Baden's secret right hand approach directly from Marcel by studying with him.
If you are interested in Jazz guitar. Or Brazilian guitar, especially wanna know the technique of Baden Powell and Toquinho.
Feel free to contact me!

Reviews (1)
My review of Joy's lesson is that he is not only fantastic at his guitar playing but also an enthusiastic teacher that will teach everything you want to know, solve your doubts, and, more importantly, help you to get closer to your musical goal. In my own opinion, he is a patient and amicable teacher that would not mind if I was making mistakes in his class. Instead, he encouraged me and guided me through my mistakes, and provided solutions accordingly to my problems. All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend Joy to all students who want to learn more about jazz guitar to participate in his class because he could really help you to improve.
Baden Powell and Toquinho are two of the most important guitar legends in the Brazilian music history.
Together with Vinicius de Moraes, Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, Edu Lobo, Chico Buarque, João Bosco, Elis Regina, etc. They made the history of Brazilian music.
In this short-term lesson,
I will focus on the right hand approach of the great Baden Powell and Toquinho.
Baden's right hand technique has always been discussed that it was too mysterious.
If you go on YouTube to check any Cover version or even Transcription of his tunes, you will never see someone who can reproduce his technique. It's simply because it is very complicated if you don't know the principle.
By directly studying from Baden's only student, his son - the great Marcel Powell. I'm approved by Marcel, and would love to share his father approach.
Toquinho right hand technique for comping
After the death of Vinicius de Moares, Toquinho gradually changed the way of his accompanying into a style which involved an exclusive approach of one finger strumming.
It has become almost the only approach he is using nowadays. It is also a very exclusive technique you rarely see other use except Toquinho.
*Note that. There are many other ways to play Brazilian music.

Piano Lessons with two Grand Pianos. Preparations for ABRSM and Competition. There are two grand pianos at the location in Den Haag. There will be enough distance between the student and the teacher.
For children, it is important to develop basic musical skills through Singing, Rythmique, and Ear training besides piano playing. I use one technical exercise book, the main textbook, and a theory book. Through these 3 books, students learn different aspects of music and they naturally get ready for exams and grades.
After acquiring basic skills, students study Harmony and Chord exercises too. These are useful for playing pops and jazz, and they obtain a deeper understanding of classical pieces too.
Private Piano lesson, from age 4 and above. Children can start the lesson after being able to read the numbers from 1 to 5 and the alphabet from A to G.
Advanced students who want to prepare for competitions, auditions, ABRSM, GCSE, IB exams, or the entrance exam of the conservatory.
The concert is held annually together with students of flute, violin, and composition teachers.
For the ages 1-7 years, I have group Rhythmique lessons.

Guitar and music theory lessons by a qualified and experienced teacherI specialize in teaching about Music and how to play the Guitar.
In class, I always make an effort to understand what are the goals and interests of all students, as well as their skills. This way we can address the issues at hand more effectively and make sure the student never loses his/her interest and focus in music and his/her instrument. I believe that an honest and friendly relationship between teacher and student is essential for this exchange of ideas to happen more clearly and fluently, so I do my best to make everyone feel comfortable enough to share their thoughts freely.
I offer good and personalized classes. This means that there will be special care with your interest in music and guitar, all basic skills will be worked upon and strengthened, all specific requests and ideas will be addressed, both improvisation and interpretation can be developed, and exploring potential, achieving goals and having fun are main priorities.
Come and enjoy learning more about Music and Guitar!

Electric Guitar Lessons / Acoustic Guitar Lessons / Music Theory LessonsI'm a 32-year old guitarist and composer based in Den Haag, teaching electric and acoustic guitar, in combination with music theory (if that is of interest to the student). I teach in English or in Greek. I am half Greek and half Scottish and I have been living in the Netherlands for the last 6 years.
I offer lessons in all styles, to all age groups, and for any experience level (ranging from students who have never touched a guitar before, up to advanced players who are looking for new challenges).
Face to face lessons are preferable, but I also teach online.
I am a patient and open minded teacher, and my desire is to help you learn what you want to learn, and make sure you have fun with playing the guitar and nurture your curiosity and excitement about the world of music creation !
My Credentials:
I hold a Bachelors of Music degree from Birmingham Conservatoire (UK), and a Masters of Music from The Hague Royal Conservatory. My experience as a guitarist ranges from classical guitar studies, to playing electric guitar in rock bands, as well as experience as an improviser, performer of notated contemporary classical compositions, creator and performer of ambient and electronic music. I also am very experienced in ambient and electronic-influenced guitar music, which has given me an in depth knowledge also of the guitar in combination with technology such as guitar effects, computer software and multichannel setups which expand the audio palette of the guitar. I have written songs, I have written orchestra pieces, I have worked as a DIY home producer, I have released albums, and I've performed in concert halls, rock venues, squats and festivals. I even some experience in beat-making.
My music has been performed in and has taken me to several countries, including Portugal, The Czech Republic, The U.S.A., Canada, Korea, Greece, The U.K., The Netherlands.
My Teaching style:
My emphasis is to teach you based on your interests and your needs. The lessons are based around each individual student. You bring me the music you like and the things you want to learn, and I build my lessons around that.
I've taught students everything from post-rock, to metal, to K-Pop to Nepalese songs... This way the student gets to explore music on their terms, and not based on a pre-decided set of songs or exercises. Alongside this I bring exercises and other songs that help build around the skills we learn through your songs, and help you develop the techniques needed for you to learn to play the music you love. Whatever music excites you I encourage you to bring it to our lesson, as this also gives me a chance to discover some new music !
What's more, depending on your interest, we can also explore music theory, ideas on composition and songwriting, even the basics of how to record your own songs at home.
For experienced players:
If you are an experienced player looking for new challenges and new perspectives, my wide ranging knowledge of music in a large spectrum of music will help you push your playing and knowledge of music into new worlds !
Topics of our more advanced lessons could include: in depth exploration of the possibilities of guitar pedals, using Ableton live with the electric guitar, reading scores, writing scores, exploring extended guitar techniques, using multi-amp setups, recording your own songs, playing contemporary classical works that include the electric guitar, exploring finger picking, using alternative guitar tunings, going deeper into music theory, exploring genres you haven't heard of (ranging from classical, to experimental, to free jazz, to electronic music)

Piano and Music - "Every pianist should focus on being a complete and balanced musician""I am a pianist. I started playing the piano at the age of seven and I am passionate about music. I am fascinated by the world of pedagogy, understanding that teaching is helping to learn. I am committed to my work with dedication and enthusiasm, and I believe that motivation is the key to both teaching and learning. I want to educate in values and I am committed to the pursuit of educational quality, based on equity and excellence. I am flexible and adaptable to each person, and I like teamwork. I appreciate discipline, rigor in my work, effort, and resilience. My aim is to help students learn constructively and to help them become autonomous as soon as possible. The focus is always on the student."
I structure the classes into three blocks, which I consider essential:
-Technique: through exercises and studies we must develop technical ability.
- Works of all styles: we learn from the great artists of all periods.
-Introduction to jazz and modern music: we will create a routine to work on improvisation and develop creativity.
These are the paths I propose, but each student is free to develop what he/she wishes. I also complement the classes with musical language and harmony.
Every pianist should focus on being a complete and balanced musician. We must develop aural skills, sight-reading, mastery of musical language and harmony, composition, improvisation, creativity, a critical spirit, good taste in music, and above all, a passion for music.

Guitar, Mandolin, Music Theory lessons by enthusiastic tutor and performerEnthusiastic guitar tutor and performer.
I started playing classical guitar at the age of 6, and my formal musical education began at the age of 9 when I started attending a music school in Croatia. After 6 years of primary school, I continued studying classical guitar at a secondary music school in Varazdin, Croatia. During that period I received training in classical harmony, Counterpoint (polyphony), Solfeggio, Music history and gained plenty of experience in orchestral playing and choral singing. I decided to continue my musical education in Manchester where I was studying for an undergraduate degree at the Royal Northern College of Music and currently I am studying at the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague. As a performing guitarist, I have successfully participated and won prizes in a number of international competitions in the UK, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Hercegovina. Although my studies are primarily related to classical music, I am comfortable playing and performing music in a range of other styles and genres. I am also experienced with mandolin and Croatian folk instrument called tamburitza.

Trumpet Lessons and Music Coaching (all ages and levels)Welcome! My name is Caleb and I look forward to working together in lessons online or at your home around The Hague!
My teaching is customized to support each student's musical goals. Prior to moving to The Hague, I spent five years teaching group and private lessons for a variety of arts education organizations in Philadelphia (USA). In each space, I create safe and fun learning environments for students by maintaining a consistently supportive demeanor and by using positive reinforcement to encourage student behavior and growth. I’m patient, and empathetic, and maintain a firm belief in all students’ capacity for improvement and success.
In the lessons, we will focus on creating a beautiful, efficient, and flexible sound through various exercises and musical pieces. I will facilitate exploration that leads students to learn about effective learning habits and to be able to self-identify what they can do to improve. This helps students become their own teachers – an essential skill for improving in music, and also relevant in many other areas in life.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. I look forward to meeting you!
Caleb
