Tutoring for Language and Literature Students, University Application Support

Language is an important communication skill that, when used precisely and treated with care, can be so powerful that it can bring even the most disparate of people into common ground.

Literature is similar, allowing a look into the minds of others. It is an important reflection of the time and cultural situation in which it was written and allows the reader to have a well rounded view of the society they live in as a whole.

I can provide language lessons for people, beginner to advanced students in English and Spanish, as well as Italian. Furthermore, I can support literary studies and offer in depth discussions about texts as well as help on structuring essays and general study habits.

Furthermore, if needed, I can provide to students help in writing personal statements for university and in preparing for interviews (most specifically for Oxbridge candidates).

It is not needed for a student to do all three options, they may choose to their liking what they would like support on.

Extra information

Bring a laptop and something to take notes on. In the case that you are studying literature send me your text in advance and in the case that you are wanting support on personal statements, send me it in advance.

About Me

Hi, I’m Barbara! I am 19 years old and grew up in Glasgow. I love to read, write (prose, songs, anything) and play guitar. I am friendly, creative and incredibly passionate about my subject (and have been known to get a bit obsessive about it - good for my students, bad for my social life). I love horror films, and would love to work on an Ti West project (no matter how far fetched that is).

My classes are casual, as I am focused on the comfort of my students, and the meetings would be propelled forward by the student’s needs and wants. I am able to go through developing close reading skills, as well as essay structuring and how to break down questions. In terms of a language paper, I can make vocabulary lists as well as grammar sheets, and the student and I would be able to practice an immersive conversation to improve confidence in language ability.

Ancient Greek Grammar, Syntax, and Literature: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced
My Ancient Greek class is fitting for learners at any level. Having studied Ancient Greek now for six years, not only in school but also at the Universities of Glasgow and Cambridge, I am extremely familiar with the language and its challenges. Using the Cambridge Reading Greek and Greek GCSE textbooks, adapted texts, and even "real" Greek literature where appropriate, I envisage Greek teaching and tutoring that focusses on the necessary aspects of grammar and rote language learning but supplements them with knowledge of Ancient Greek culture, history, and literature to make the language more alive and relevant. I am well-acquainted not only with the requirements of Greek learning at school, particularly for GCSEs, but also with the expectations of university Greek courses. A beginner will come to understand the fundamentals of the language, common vocabulary, and the "philosophy" that underlies grammatical forms and syntactical structures, an intermediate learner will come to grasp the more nuanced and trickier aspects of Greek grammar and reading, and an advanced learner will find confidence in reading Greek texts "in the wild" and the fluidity of translation and interpretation. Classes can be catered easily to the specific learning needs of any individual.

Elise
French private lessons by university graduate in Letters
Holder of a Master's degree in Letters and endowed with a solid experience in private lessons, I provide French lessons for students wishing to: - consolidate their bases in grammar, spelling - improve their language skills (allophone students) - improve their speaking skills (conversation classes) -profect the written expression - prepare for ECR exams - prepare for the written examinations at the end of the studies (maturity, certificate of completion) - help with the writing of works of maturity (or other works of end of studies), of dissertation - work on argumentative texts - acquire a method to analyze literary texts - learn how to perform bibliographic research The course material is a Google Docs document that I create in which my explanations, possible links, exercises appear. By reading it regularly, progress will be faster. It can also be used in addition to other documents (files printed by school teachers and/or books) and has many advantages: automatic updating, downloadable on tablets and smartphones, simultaneous monitoring of what is writing. For help with writing: The objective is above all to acquire effective tools. The student will thus be able to learn to structure his ideas, argue coherently (and convincingly) and enrich his vocabulary. It is essential for me to have written work from the student between each lesson. For analyzes of oral literary texts: In order to optimize the time available (and to put ourselves in conditions closest to oral exams), we choose together an extract from a work that the student will have previously prepared before the lesson. This would take around 20 minutes at most, and ideally just a little before the meeting time. If necessary, I have the habit of taking a paragraph at random which would serve as a basis for analyzing a passage. For the corrections of end of studies work: so that the meeting with the student is at the most profitable, I ask him to send me his writings before the meeting. Apart from my presence with the student, any course involves a preparation time before and after the lesson, including the work that I correct. My goal is to design an individualized course, so I take the time to write detailed comments on corrected work or tips to ensure maximum success for everyone. For example, an editorial correction can easily be the subject of a detailed commentary of 4 typewritten pages. For adults (FLE): In order to optimally prepare the first ones, I take the initiative to inform myself in advance of their objectives / expectations. Whether to practice speaking in everyday life, the professional world or to practice oral presentations, I prepare either PPT or technical sheets in advance that I send by mail ( after booking on the website). The other alternative is to make a PV of the course that I send (or that I print). Giving importance to keeping a written record on the one hand to better memorize the topics covered, on the other hand to better assimilate the spelling. Of a general nature, a concrete situation that responds to the learner's needs is the starting point. From this situation, I address the essential grammatical points.

Communication Training (Professional / Personal) & Public Speaking
Whether your goal is personal or professional, speaking is a predominantly physical activity, relying on a body, a voice, a breath, a rhythm (diction) and an emotion (the imagination and the sensations, reflecting the involvement of the speaker in his speech. How to send a clear message? How to make the difference, to make an impression? How to regain self-confidence and control the management of his emotions? Knowing how to speak in public is now a necessity for the company and in the company. From a personal point of view, this is a vector for better relationships and optimal messages. On the phone, in a meeting, in front of a client or a banker (...), your public speaking must be effective and efficient with clear, simple and powerful messages, creating a match between the message received and the message sent. Simple and pragmatic tools will be presented and then put into practice for: generating listening ● making an impression ● fostering trust ● generating need ● motivating teams by explaining a strategy ● getting messages across within groups. Controlled, the method allows: • improve self-confidence and stress management with the development of the speaker's fluency (verbal-bodily), his public speaking and his sense of repartee and improvisation • to work on his ease, leadership, his NLP, his charisma, his creativity and to go towards a certain personal development, through a set of scenarios * improve the characteristics of the spoken voice (timbre, pitch, intention, flow) Completed by basic exercises (diction, voice, presence, breathing, presentation, time management ...), role plays, improvisations and simulations will be set up. With the key words: pronunciation, rhetoric, verbal and non-verbal communication, diction / articulation, the sense of repartee, structured speech (...). The goal is not only to focus on verbal communication but also on nonverbal communication, so as to make the control of his body, his voice (...), a real and lasting strength. Depending on the interaction between the trainer - coach and the one who consults, there is no single way to operate: each type of session depends on the needs and difficulties of each. In all cases, it is very often a question, while adapting to your own needs and after having precisely diagnosed your desired objective and the blockages encountered, to combine the theory (the bases of the studied concept, for example NLP / information asymmetry / the "how to say no" / the tools of non-verbal communication or the application of kinaesthesia) and its application (through exercises and direct applications). For example, are discussed: - the fundamentals of public speaking: breathing, gaze and body language - diction and elocution: rhythm and range of your voice - management of your emotions and your emotional overflow (example: stress) - work on the body, to amplify your charisma and ensure consistency between your message and your body ... with the aim of: * Enhance your presentation and arouse interest by focusing on your strengths, your qualities ... your personality * Match the content and form of your message * Improve your charisma, your self-confidence and the benefits of your emotional intelligence Postgraduate School Training & Ivy league college in the United States, specialized and worked for over 13 years, in Europe and North America, in the field of communication and public speaking in renowned public and private international institutions, involved in forums and conferences, and focused on two areas: training and coaching, with the key words pedagogy and careful methodology. PLACES - Locations: Geneva - Lausanne - Friborg - Neuchâtel - Montreux - Basel - Sion - Sierre - Morges - Bienne. But currently and until further notice, only by videoconference in accordance with national recommendations on Covid. These sessions also seem to be perfectly unanimous since they have the advantages of live (example: quality of the interaction), without its disadvantages (example: loss of travel time) with additional advantages (example: notes that can be re-read on the chat). In this context, the videoconference sessions for which you asked me to seem to suit everyone perfectly, take place very optimally and generate a certain enthusiasm (and a certain enthusiasm). That is why, at your request, I continue to offer this option. Take good care of yourself and yours! PROGRAM A la carte program: evaluated and adapted to each need.
