Understanding Art History, from the Renaissance to Contemporary Art

Having just graduated with an MA from the University of St Andrews with First Class Honours in Art History and Film studies, I am excited the offer you the opportunity to receive tutoring on the breadth of art history. My degree covered the Renaissance period up to contemporary art, but I specialised in modules on 19th and 20th century Britain, France, Spain and Northern Europe. My approach to teaching would be catered to your preferences and key interests in what is such a broad field of study. However, I would also be happy to teach what could be referred to as the 'story of art history', and take you through the key movements in chronological order.

About Me

I take pride in a rigorous but considerate approach to tutoring. I think it is very important to go at the pace of the student and be willing to go off piece and explore different avenues as we go along. This ensures that a well rounded understanding of topics is gained in a manner that suits the student and is most likely to be retained. Lessons should be fun and engaging, but also challenging and encourage depth of thought and an enthusiasm to get stuck into topics. Art History is a lifelong passion of mine, and I hope to bring out such a passion in my students.

Experience / Qualifications

University of St Andrews Art Society President
September 2023 - June 2024

I achieved progressive leadership roles within the University’s prestigious Art Society, elected as Events Coordinator in from 2021-2022, Vice President from 2022-2023, and finally President from 2023-2024.
- As president, I chaired weekly meetings for our diverse 21-member committee with varying skills and experience, assigning relevant tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the society, which boasts over 300 paid members and is open to the entire student body and members of the public.
- My year as president saw us double our average yearly takings.
- I oversaw the running of weekly life drawing classes, which were most often at full capacity, hosting over
one hundred student artists a week, and often featuring live music.
- Organised and oversaw weekly specialist workshops and social events. Sourcing locations was a
consistent challenge in a town without dedicated art-making spaces, and we have consistently increased
our venue size for events as our society has gained popularity and social media presence over the years.
- Endeavoured to ensure that the society was accessible to students of all artistic levels across mediums.
- I personally taught many workshops during my time on the society, and supported my fellow committee
members as they gained confidence running their own classes.
- Sourced specialist teachers where necessary to ensure the highest quality technical classes, and
collaborated with organisations external to the university to ensure resources were made available to
student artists where they were not immediately available in town.
- Oversaw the curation of semesterly exhibitions featuring student art, which could involve silent auctions,
live music, formal opening nights, and rotating exhibitions. Our exhibitions are very popular and are visited by hundreds of students.

Collections Assistant at Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings
Jun 2021 - Aug 2023

Over the summer months of the last few years, I worked on organising and cataloguing items in the museum's extensive archives. I have assisted the Head of Collections in archiving newly acquired items, and re-archiving previous collections on an updated database. I have handled and organised the museum's collections of architectural, agricultural and domestic pieces from varying time periods, with a primary focus on war-time Britain. This involved researching objects with unknown provenance to ascertain their age, function and significance etc. I also regularly assisted with weddings and event days at the museum, as well as the day to day running of the site. I have also taught workshops to visiting groups, such as basket weaving.

Social Media and Podcast Coordinator at Worcester Talking Newspaper for the blind
Jan 2016 - Jan 2020

I worked as the social media coordinator and computing assistant at WTN, a UK charity which provides free recordings of local news and listener equipment to visually impaired people in the community. During my time I set up a weekly podcast system, for easier access to the charity's weekly recordings. This revolutionised their approach to circulating recordings, making the charity’s work more accessible and impactful for listeners around the globe.

Trained painter and Creator-Researcher in the arts gives courses in Painting with historical influences
This course offers an in-depth exploration of painting, with an emphasis on the techniques, styles, and artistic movements that have marked the history of art. Intended for students of all levels, the course combines practical painting sessions with theoretical studies of iconic works, allowing participants to draw inspiration from old and contemporary masters to develop their own style. Currently studying art history at the École du Louvre, and having studied in prestigious schools such as the École Olivier de Serres, I am a creator-researcher in contemporary art, specializing in culinary design, which enriches my pedagogical approach with a unique interdisciplinary perspective. Students will learn to master various painting techniques, such as oil, acrylic, and watercolor, while discovering how these mediums have evolved over the centuries, techniques that I learned in particular during my professional experience in the museographic workshops (decoration painting) of the Louvre Museum. In parallel, discussions and analyses of works of art will allow us to situate the practice of painting in a broader historical and cultural context.

Private lessons in French, English, Spanish, art history, history
With a master's degree in Language, Literature and Civilization of the English-Speaking World, I took a large number of courses in history, art history and of course languages, literature and translation during my studies at the universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh and Montpellier. This is why I offer courses in most of the literary and linguistic subjects taught in middle and high schools: Spanish (my mother tongue, which I have been teaching for years in private lessons), English (a language I have spoken for almost 15 years and which I taught in the national education system for a year), French, history and art history. All of these subjects fascinate me enormously and I want to pass this passion on to my students. It is entirely possible to combine several of these subjects, which are ultimately very linked to each other.

Macarena Muñoz

The class will chart the development of European, American and International art history from 1900 to the present day, beginning with Post-Impressionism and its off-springs Cubism and Expressionism, the move into Abstraction post-war, to Conceptualism and Minimalism of the 1960s and 1970s which still have significant relevance in today's Contemporary art world. The focus will be on the wider political issues that impacted art history of the time, thereby using art history as a novel and unique lens through which we can gauge world history events, and its politics, in a potentially new and interesting light.
