Piano and music theory lessons for all ages and levels

Welcome to my piano teaching studio! I am a professional pianist offering private piano and theory lessons for students of all levels. As a pianist with over 14 years of teaching experience in Europe and the USA, as well as over 23 years of playing/performing, I enjoy motivating my students with music of their own preferred style and interest, whether that be classical or contemporary. My main goal is to promote a positive experience and love for music-making during the learning process. If the student is interested in a more structured approach, I guide preparation for grades 1-8 of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) piano and music theory exams where my students consistently receive highest marks. I also have successful experience preparing students for conservatory entrance auditions, masterclasses, and competitions in the Europe, the USA, India, and Canada. We have class concerts at Pianos Maene for interested students twice per year. I am happy to provide either a more relaxed or a serious approach to learning piano, we simply need to discuss the personal goals and preferences of each student. My own studies are as follows: I have obtained two postgraduate performance degrees at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp: "Concertsoloist" in Piano Performance and "Chamber Music." Prior to this, I received my Bachelor and Masters degrees in Piano Performance/Music from the University of Minnesota - Minneapolis and Texas Christian University, Fort Worth (USA). My experience includes collaboration with many different instrumentalists and singers, performing as a soloist and collaborative member in several orchestras, and receiving top prizes in several competitions. While maintaining my performance and recording career in Belgium at present, I am developing my private music studio in central Antwerp and look forward to meeting new students.

In piano lessons, we use the book method of Notus or Hal Leonard. Everything is explained step by step and you gradually learn to read music and know the piano. At the start of our lessons we'll take a look at what is important to you. What goals do you want to set, and what feels achievable and comfortable? We set long-term goals of, for example, a year. Completely tailored to where you are at, right now. During the lessons I am patient, motivating, encouraging, and complimenting. I'll point out what could be better, and also pay attention to how you can play more easily. And much more. Tailored to your needs and wishes.

In my class, I teach piano in a way that allows you to make progress on your own. "Don't give a man a fish, instead teach him how to fish," is the idea here. My methods include, besides basics, approaches to expressing your own musicality, stable memorization, practice habits and efficiency, technical ease, focus exercises, body awareness, and stage fright. Hence, I am best suited for intermediate and advanced students that have the desire to either study piano on a collegiate level or make significant improvements for themselves. I would like to add at this point that I have a special affinity for the concert etudes by Frédéric Chopin. However, I am perfectly happy to start with students from the very beginning as well and regardless, I will adjust to my student's needs upon mutual agreement. My free times that I listed as available are a rough estimate, lesson times are normally negotiable.

The content of the lessons is adapted to the needs and wishes of each student. It is possible to follow a combination of music theory and instrument, or only focus on one aspect. Depending on the student's goal, the level, teaching method and music styles are adjusted and personalized in consultation. Together we will look at what your learning needs are and which method suits you best. I am familiar with different styles for both harp and piano, from classical music (baroque, impressionism, classicism, romanticism and contemporary music), to folk music, jazz standards, pop songs or minimalist music. There is also the option to work from improvisations. The lessons are suitable for all ages and levels, the personal profile of the student is central.

If you want to get better at playing the guitar and music in general, this class is for you. Over the years of playing and studying music with guitar as my main instrument, I have amassed a great deal of knowledge, skill, information, etc. which I would like to share with all the seekers. I have taught piano for 4 years and I see it as the means to bring my experience with music directly to students. Therefore, my primary goal as a teacher is to make this experience enjoyable, enriching, and challenging. My lessons are organized depending on the level, needs, and objectives of the student. We can work on classic repertoire, pop, and movie soundtracks, or improvise. I love to share my passion for music with my students.

I have been learning the violin and piano since 5 years old, and am currently taking a bachelor's in Music Performance in Violin, at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. Students of any age are welcome, and I have special experience with beginner and younger students, having given a lot of lessons in piano and music theory. I teach in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and basic Dutch. The individual piano lessons are personalized and tailored to the progress and learning ability of each student. Emphasis is placed on developing good posture and ease of movement at the early stage. We will then continue to revise and enhance technique while taking on a more challenging repertoire as they progress. Lessons are stress-free and I always try to provide a safe and calm environment for an engaging and fun class! Games for little kids are an absolute must!
