With thirteen years' teaching experience, in universities, private institutes, secondary schools and as a private tutor, I have a PhD in Comparative Literature and a broad understanding of learning techniques and approaches. I am friendly, approachable, and will tailor my teaching to your needs, objectives, likes and dislikes. With expertise across English and Anglophone Literature, theory and criticism, Comparative and French Literature, different exams and curricula, I feel confident helping you achieve your aims, whether personal, professional, or exam based. My research focuses on contemporary poetry, postcolonial literature, music and popular culture, ecopoetry and nature writing. I have taught a whole range of periods, movements and critical approaches. I also have many years' experience teaching English as a second language, including conversation skills for different contexts. I also teach writing skills, both professional and academic (including essay writing), and am happy to tailor classes to specific aims (for an event, a presentation, an interview, a specific professional field). I think that teaching works best when it works on your level: you can learn English through discussion of music, TV series, books, and more - I am happy to integrate grammar and learning points into this. In terms of Literature, we can approach a book, author, poem, play, theoretical work, movement or moment, together, and in different ways, drawing on the classes and materials I have developed over ten years in leading Parisian universities (I have also worked in the British and US university contexts). I am also happy to teach creative writing skills - particularly poetry and non-fiction, so please feel free to ask about this, too!

Understanding Poetry Forms and Techniques: Students will learn about different forms of poetry such as sonnets, haikus, free verse, and more. They'll explore poetic devices like rhyme, meter, imagery, symbolism, and metaphor, and how these elements contribute to the overall meaning and impact of a poem. 2. Writing Poetry: Students will have opportunities to write their own poems, experimenting with different forms, styles, and themes. They'll receive feedback from peers and instructors to improve their craft and develop their unique voice as poets. 3. Exploring Poetic Themes and Subjects: Students will delve into various themes commonly found in poetry, such as love, nature, identity, social justice, and existentialism. They will analyse how poets explore and express these themes through their work. 4. Studying Poetic Traditions and Movements: Students will learn about the history of poetry, including major poetic movements and influential poets from different time periods and cultural backgrounds. They'll examine how poetry has evolved over time and its role in shaping society and culture. 5. Analysing and Interpreting Poetry: Students will develop skills in close reading and critical analysis, learning how to interpret poems and uncover deeper layers of meaning. They'll explore different approaches to literary criticism and apply these methods to a range of poetic texts. 6. Engaging with Contemporary Poetry: Students will engage with contemporary poetry from diverse voices and perspectives, exploring current trends and developments in the world of poetry. They'll discuss the relevance of poetry in today's society and its potential to address pressing issues and provoke thought and discussion. 7. Performing and Sharing Poetry: Students will be given opportunities to perform their own poems or those of others in spoken word events, poetry slams, or readings. Trusted teacher: My classes involve a mixture of discovering poetry in its diverse forms and responding to writing exercises. All activities have the aim of expanding the student's personal relationship with this incredible art form and developing their power to self-express creatively. We will look at how poetry continues to challenge the status quo and can act as a space for connection, emotional healing and rebirth in climates of limitation and struggle. I am passionate about teaching poetry writing because I have seen how beneficial the sharing and crafting of poetry is for mental health; I want to bring this passion into people's lives and am as excited to learn from each student's insights and creations as I am to impart knowledge and feedback. I am an experienced tutor and published poet with a first-class honours degree in English and Spanish from Durham University. My anthology "Poems of Hope", on the subject of mental health, was published in 2019 to fundraise for Mind UK. I am currently studying part-time postgraduate course in teaching creative writing with Cambridge University to complement writing and teaching. I have 5+ years of experience tutoring English and have devised and delivered poetry workshops for vulnerable adults as well as tutored creative writing throughout the pandemic. I have also spent a year working with SEN students in secondary education as a teaching assistant. I welcome teenagers and adults who identify as neurodivergent, disabled or struggling with mental health. I hope to hear from you and look forward to journeying into poetry together.

Lina
I have been taking vocal lessons with Lina for some time now, and I can definitely say she is a very professional and cultured teacher. I mostly appreciate her keen observation, which helps her make her classes tailored to your goals and needs. Lina is the type of teacher who inspires and empowers you to take control of your own learning journey, as she says, 'to become a teacher of your own.' Joyful and enthusiastic, with a very warm presence, she makes you walk out of her lesson equipped with clear goals, positive energy, and determination.
