The kanun is an instrument of the zither family, used historically in various cultures including Arabic, Armenian, Turkish and Greek. I am a professional performer and hold a Bachelor's degree in Musicology from the University of Ioannina (Greece), specializing in the kanun. I am also currently a Master's student at the University of Macedonia (Greece) where I will be researching novel orchestrations of Greek art music of the 1960s, using the kanun. In the lesson we will be focusing on technique, repertoire (mainly Greek and Ottoman), makam theory and elements of taksim improvisation.
