Trusted teacher: My name is Luke and I am a 24 year old, multi-award winning guitarist from Greenwich, London. I am an experienced and enthusiastic teacher and am adept at all varieties of guitar playing, including, classical, acoustic, electric and bass. Regarding my previous experience in tutoring, I have given 1000's of hours of guitar tuition both privately and in school settings. These experiences have given me a keen sense of how to motivate students and offer them concise and useful advice. I have worked at many excellent institutions in the past, including Streatham and Clapham Girls' School (one of the top private girls schools in the country), Orpington Music Studio, The Royal Arsenal School of Music and Canada Blanch Music Academy. I have found over my experiences of being taught and then eventually teaching that the best method for getting the most out of a student is to listen. If the tutor is acutely aware of where their student needs help and where they are already confident, they can tailor classes carefully to make the best use of the time allowed and to get the maximum potential out of them. This philosophy leads to classes being student-oriented, in that the student leads the tuition. The tutor acts as a supportive crutch, first working through problems together, then allowing them to explore it themselves with the tutor to lean back on. In my first years of training, like many others, I completed grades. Because of this I have a very good knowledge of what it takes to move along this system. However, the grade system should not be seen as the only way to learn an instrument. The same achievement can be gained through simple discussion between student and teacher and the correct prescription of pieces and studies to work on. I'm Katie, a professional multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and educator with a big desire to support my students to ignite their own passion for music. As a teacher I have 12 years' experience creatively inspiring young people and adults in 1:1 lessons, leading choirs, directing music for youth theatre companies and in a charity providing music to vulnerable teenagers. I'm a trauma informed practitioner and work directly with the amazing potential of music to translate feelings into sound. Understanding music theory is a liberating tool for doing just this - and I seek to find what lights up my students and make the learning fascinating and fun, tailored to how they learn best. As a musician I've played for 23 years, I achieved my grade 5 theory and grade 5 cello exams aged 11, I've have had my original compositions played on Jazz FM and BBC 6 Music, achieved a 1st at Durham University studying music, grade 6 piano as a teenager and grade 8 distinction in flute, as well as becoming fluent on electric bass, ukulele and voice. I began my teaching practice while pursuing a Bachelor of Music Performance at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin, inheriting students from my father (also a violin teacher) and later teaching the younger students of my violin professor. Following my studies in Ireland, I moved to the United Kingdom, where I obtained a Master of Music Performance from the Royal College of Music, London and an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, both with distinction. During my studies, I taught extensively across the London and Birmingham areas, both in person and online, taking one to one lessons and group ensembles. In my teaching, I follow the ABRSM grade system alongside a vast selection of relevant study books and pieces/sonati/concerti, individually tailored to the needs and requirements of each student, allowing an enjoyable, rewarding and worthwhile musical experience.
