Readers and Writers Workshop is a student-centered instructional model that fosters independent learning and skill development in literacy. The core principles of this approach include: Workshop Structure: Mini-lessons: Short, focused instruction on a specific reading or writing skill or strategy Independent Practice: Students engage in independent reading and/or writing, applying the skills learned Conferencing: One-on-one or small group work between teacher and students to provide personalized feedback and support Student-Centered Learning: Emphasizes student choice and ownership over the reading and writing process Encourages students to select their own "just right" books and writing topics Promotes active engagement and self-reflection through activities like goal-setting and peer sharing Differentiated Instruction: Teachers use ongoing assessment to tailor mini-lessons, conferences, and assignments to individual student needs Flexible grouping allows students to receive targeted support or enrichment as required Accommodations and modifications ensure accessibility for diverse learners Focus on Process: Equal emphasis on the development of reading and writing skills, strategies, and habits Teaches students to view reading and writing as iterative, recursive processes Fosters meta-cognitive awareness through modeling, think-alouds, and reflection The Readers and Writers Workshop approach aims to cultivate confident, independent learners who are equipped with the skills and dispositions to engage meaningfully with texts and express themselves effectively through writing. Its student-centric focus and emphasis on the reading-writing connection make it a powerful framework for literacy instruction.

Are you interested in poetry but not sure how or where to begin? Have you always loved creative writing but thought the 'poetry world' was not for you? Perhaps you have ideas about what you'd like to explore but you have no idea how to get them on paper? Or perhaps you aspire to perform your poetry but you don't feel confident enough? Well this might just be the class for you! I'm a published poet & professional actor. I have over fifteen years experience performing professionally in all contexts- from Shakespeare (recently at the Globe with 'As You Like It') to Spoken Word. I also have lots of experience teaching poetry masterclasses and I have delivered these classes with various arts organisations including with The Poetry School and Southbank Centre. I teach beginners to advanced level and I'm currently writing my full legth poetry collection. My awards include Ledbury Poetry Prize 2021 (winner), Creative Future Writers' Award 2021 (silver) and Out-Spoken Prize for Poetry, 2023 (winner). My classes will be tailored to your needs and each workshop will be designed specfically to help you in areas that you would like to improve and develop. We will work with your specific interests and lessons will centre different areas including but not limited to; poetic form and structure, contemporary poetry and free verse, finding you poetic voice, the poetic line, rhyme, ways to get started, titles, and editing. In terms of spoken word- I can teach you perfromance technique and help you craft brilliant spoken word pieces that you can share with audiences far and wide!
