_________________________ Hello all! I am Rachel Tin-Wing Baxter, an Architect / Artist and a qualified TEFL teacher. I was born and raised in Hong Kong, moved to the UK 15 years ago so I am fluent in English, Mandarine and Cantonese. We can have classes online, or, I can babysit at the same time, at mine with my puppy and my husband, or outside in a cafe. I have worked with children at my church in the UK and I can give fun, exciting, innovative, art classes in French (B2 Level). If you are an adult and want more serious lessons, I can provide that. As a RIBA certified Architect, I have knowledge and experience in architecture and Art, and I am more than happy to share my learnings with you. I look forward to meeting you and to help you in learning a new language or a new skill! Best regards, Rachel
Art
I have been involved in art for twenty years. I started out painting and selling both oils and watercolours. This developed to become, for a while, the main source of our household income. I managed to have solo exhibitions in Devon and Kent in the UK, as well as USA, Japan and, when I lived in France, several there too. When I returned from France, I started my academic studies in Fine Art Sheffield Hallam and Leeds Arts University where I receive a BA and MA in fine art. I have great interest in the theory of fine art, such as composition, perspective, colour theory; the technology of fine art in understanding materials used and techniques applied. The theories of doing that allow successful expression. As well as purely fine art theory, this allows me to bring in psychology and other scientific thought, not to usurp fine are theory, but to bolster it both to confirm existing theories as well as opening out possible avenues for discovering new ones. In painting I see myself as impressionist but recently have moved more towards realism to better communicate with internet viewer. This is because, when a piece is photographed, people cannot see complexity of the brush strokes used. I like to paint genre where complicated compositions and intellectual work is involved but I also do portraits, still life and landscape. In sculpture I use mostly archaic composition, as exemplified by Henry Moore and Aristide Maillol. I really enjoy sharing my love of art with other. I believe everybody can express themselves through art (and probably should) and I love being a catalyst to make that happen. I do not use restrictive instruction where I tell students what they must do, but help them develop themselves - help them to discover their own way while sharing helpful insights from my own practice and wide knowledge of fine art practice and theory.

Taught by RCA graduate and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. This class is an informal assessment of your visual arts level. It is available online internationally and in person within 25 miles of BH12 in the UK.* The purpose of this class is to discover what visual arts level you are. This information can be used so I can create bespoke classes for you, you may be wanting a second opinion or you may want advice on what creative path to follow, whether that is continuing to work with me or for further education, scholarships or competition applications. You are welcome to book to support your education, for leisure or simply so I can help you fulfil a creative dream. I also have a lot of experience helping clients overcome creative blocks and developing wellbeing practices for creatives. I am here to support you, so however you wish to use this class and its results is your choice. We will discuss your passions and your goals. You will be asked to prepare a selection of the work you have made previously to show me. This should demonstrate the range of media you enjoy working with, the subjects you love and/or the goal you currently have. Eg. If you would like to improve your painting, make sure you include recent examples of your painting. If you do not have anything, please do not worry we can create some together. In this class I will ask you some questions and I will ask you to draw for me so I can assess your drawing ability and look at how you use your tools. By asking you to draw for me, I am assessing many things that are relevant for all methods of visual arts so please do not worry if drawing is not a strength of yours. If you have particular goals we will explore this also. I will explain more as we work together. I can provide a paragraph of written tutorial feedback on what we discover together in this class so you can use this as reference moving forwards (this is optional). I look forward to working with you and learning more about your art and your goals. *If your location is more than 5 miles from BH12 then there will be an additional fee for my time travelling for you. This is charged at half the hourly teaching rate pro rata.

Learn to Draw like a Designer and Paint like an Artist (Riehen)
Smaranda
My daughter (K.) had her first lesson with Smaranda today and she enjoyed it every much. Smaranda asked questions to understand K.'s preferences and interests so that she can tailor the class accordingly, which also made for a highly enjoyable class. Smaranda took the time to explain things at first and then let K. explore the assignment at her pace. She shared tips and tricks that K. found very useful. All in all a great first lesson, and K. is very much looking forward to the next one.
