About the teacher: YORGO is a Belgian, Greek and Italian film director, writer, producer, actor and creator of the Award Winning LGBTQI+ short film Trigger. Yorgo started his artistic journey at 14 years old acting in theatres in Belgium where he was born. Aspiring for an international career, he moved to London in 2014 and joined the cast of the Immersive project The Den created by the BAFTA-winning director Gbemisola Ikumelo. Following that, he starred in several short films and features ( Remi Milligan: Lost Director, The Adopters, Amazon Prime Naanum Single Thaan). His passion for filmmaking started in 2020 when he wrote scenes for his own acting showreel. Lacking of authentic on screen representation and a desire of using his voice to raise awareness about a past traumatic event, he created the short film Trigger which was nominated in British and International LGBTQI+ festivals and won the award of Best International Short Film at the Fuse International Film Festival in Kingston ( UK/2022). The film is distributed worldwide by Gonella Productions and is available on Amazon Prime UK & US as part of These Untold Secrets. Recently, his short docuseries Well Proud directed and produced for Metro Charity (UK) was nominated for Best Community Short Film at the BAFTA Qualifying Iris Prize Film Festival in Cardiff (UK/2023). In the past 2 years, Yorgo has directed and co-produced 3 narrative short films and a short docu series and he is currently in development of his first feature film.

Are you studying Film ? Would you like to be a filmmaker? I can help. Associate Lecturer in Film Production, London Metropolitan University; Senior Lecturer in Film, Nottingham Trent University; Lecturer in Film Production and Ideation, University of Hertfordshire; Lecturer in Film, University of Worcester. Working across two departments within the Creative Arts Faculty at the University of Hertfordshire (Film; Animation) and teaching across three levels to more than 300 film and animation students, I developed, promoted and administered film production (BA Film) and ideation (BA Animation). I was also responsible for teaching, learning and assessment in film production at undergraduate level at Nottingham Trent University and Worcestershire University. At London Metropolitan, I redesigned and delivered an interdisciplinary collaborative project module in film production, including film history (70% practical short film; 30% portfolio theory & reflexive). Coming from industry, my approach to teaching is focussed on practical skills; the film industry needs graduates who are ‘set ready’ and able to work collaboratively. I contribute to the planning, delivery and assessment of undergraduate teaching and undertake a wide range of responsibilities including lecturing, mentoring, tutorials, and assessments across the whole range of university year groups. In addition to delivering content, I have developed modules in: Directing; Dealing with Actors; Acting for Camera; Storyboarding; Realism in Animated Thinking; Spectacle in Animated Thinking; History of Film Production; Storyboarding; Short Film Deconstruction; and Live Action Filmmaking for Animators. I strive to consistently provide useful, constructive, and timely informal feedback throughout the course, in addition to the formal assessments; and introduced audio feedback to the film department at Hertfordshire which was an immediate success. My own mentors and professional development have broadened my skills and my experience with course design, course writing and curriculum development. My teaching is across all levels, from theory to practice, which I teach in a symbiotic manner making connections that are then used to reinforce ideas on subject matter, storytelling, and methods of production. My passion for filmmaking, my worldwide experience and my dynamic personality enable me to instinctively motivate and inspire students; lectures are illustrated with interesting examples gained from a long and varied career in the industry. I arrange guest speakers from my network of contacts. I am committed to helping students achieve their full potential and my directorial skills of recognising talent, inspiring and motivating crew have been great assets while working in education. Students learn best when sessions are engaging and fun and led by a motivating and inspiring lecturer. My innovative approaches to teaching have turned out to be invaluable as far as increasing the depth and professionalism in students’ narrative work; strong storytelling is a major part of the reason the University of Hertfordshire’s Animation Department is now TOP 10 in the Rookies world rankings. The Lockdown Film – Isolation 2020 During the Covid pandemic, as part of a strategy to keep students motivated, we made a short film Isolation 2020. This film was made to a professional standard while maintaining all safety protocols and keeping in context with the situation we all found ourselves in.
